But is all about this 7,531 meter par 70 the most difficult course on the planet? In the words of Dustin JohnsonWho won here in 2016: “Hell, yes!”

Johnson finished four under par nine years ago, on a course that played much easier than usual, because so much rain fell that it was nicknamed ‘Soakmont’.

But only three other players in the 156 -man -field ended under par – Everything on one under – and 14 of the 18 holes played above par. Eight of them could be seen in the top fifty most difficult holes under the 990 that were used on the PGA Tour that year.

“I think I look pretty sober when I play, but internally I can absolutely do myself normal. That happens to me more than you would think.

“I think it is really a good posture to accept what just happened, and yourself is almost at zero to hit the next shot.”

Thomas believes that the majority of the field will not be able to process the setbacks and the top players.

He said: “I am completely honest and very selfish, I hope it looks many players. This course requires tons of patience and discipline, and not everyone can get a grip on that.

“Above all, Oakmont tests the mental aspect of your game. But with tight fairways, deep rough, difficult bunkers and lightning fast greens it also tests you technically to the limit.

“If you just get lazy – like every ride, every wigschot, every chip, every putt – you can look stupid pretty quickly.

“But I understand that this place is difficult. I don’t have to read articles, or I don’t have to hear horror stories. I played it. I know it’s hard.”

So lean back and enjoy the ride. It will be a bumpy one.
