Titanic fans delight in ‘door’ pool raft that proves ‘Jack could have survived’
RELATIONSHIPS may sink or float, but Titanic fans say an Amazon purchase could have saved Jack and Rose’s fate.
Many felt vindicated by the Titanic float, which was designed to resemble the iconic door that saved Rose’s life, saying it proved that Rose could have saved Jack if she had tried.
The $35 The Original Titanic Movie Pool Float, a 48-by-84-inch inflatable swimming pool, put an end to that issue once and for all in the eyes of die-hard fans.
The door controversy prompted James Cameron, director of the Hollywood film, to experiment to settle the debate.
In the National Geographic series Titanic: 25 Years Later With James Cameron, he hired a team of scientists to determine if there was enough room for Jacka and Rose on the door.
To simulate the scene, a replica of a floating door, two stunt doubles weighing the same as Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, and body sensors were used.
“We put them in ice [cold] “We tested whether they could have survived in different ways,” Cameron told The Toronto Sun.
The results of the experiment, Cameron said, showed that “there was no way either of them could have survived.”
He explained that the door could have provided Jack with temporary shelter, just long enough until a rescue boat arrived, but that scenario didn’t fit into his vision for the film.
“It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It’s a film about love, sacrifice and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice,” he said.
However, die-hard Titanic fans believed that the Titanic theme could have saved the couple, if they had had it.
“Finally a door that fits two people! Let me start by saying I’ve never felt so emotionally supported by an inflatable,” wrote one reviewer.
“As an avid Titanic fan, the scene with the wooden door has always stuck with me. ‘Would two people fit in there?!’ I’ve lost sleep, lost friends, and even lost a goldfish named Leo over this riddle.
“Enter the Inflatable Door Floatie, the savior of my water-bound love life. First of all, this thing is practically unsinkable. I invited my neighbor, a Jack lookalike, to share this nautical wonder with me.
“We both fit! I screamed, ‘I’m never letting you go, Jack!’ as I clutched at my cup holder, filled with an ice cold drink.
“Assembly was a breeze. Just a few puffs of air and you’re ready to recreate the most talked about cinematic moment of all time. And let’s talk durability. This floatie withstood sharp stares, jealous pool noodles, and even a barrage of ice cubes, in a bold homage to the original Iceberg.
“Finally, it’s multifunctional. Sure, it’s a hit at pool parties, but it’s also perfect for relationship counseling and trust exercises, and it can even serve as a surprisingly comfortable bed for guests who overstay their welcome.
“In conclusion, buy this floatie. You won’t regret it. It’s the king of the world — or at least the king of my above-ground pool.”
Others agreed that the purchase was not only good for their wallets, but also for those of friends and family.
“Jack could have survived! [The] the first thing we did after receiving it was jump in the pool. This is easy for two adults and a toddler,” said another reviewer.
“This was a gift for a friend who was having a pool party. It was a hit and everyone wanted to see if they could fit in it.”
“I’m a huge Titanic fan and I bought this the moment I saw it. Yes, Jack could have fit. But the question is, with the waves [and] buoyancy, would that work? Oh well, my heart will keep going,” joked a third.
