KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress candidates were ahead of their rivals in by-elections held in four assembly chairs in West Bengal, where counting began on Saturday morning, according to the Election Commission website. The by-elections for Maniktala, Bagda, Ranaghat Dakshin and Raiganj seats were held on July 10.
TMCSupti Pandey’s nominee had a lead of 8,627 votes over her nearest rival Kalyan Chaubey of the BJP in Maniktala in Kolkata, while Trinamool Congress candidate Krishna Kalyani had a lead of 21,393 votes over Manas Kumar Ghosh of the saffron camp in Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur district.
Madhuparna Thakur of TMC had a lead of 12,444 votes over her rival Binay Kumar Biswas of BJP in the Bagda state assembly seat in North 24 Parganas district.
Mukut Mani Adhikari of the TMC had a lead of 2,139 votes over BJP candidate Manoj Kumar Biswas in Ranaghat Dakshin in North 24 Parganas.
The BJP has secured Ranaghat Dakshin, Bagda and Raiganj districts in the 2021 elections.
The Maniktala seat was won by the TMC in 2021, but fell vacant after former state minister Sadhan Pandey passed away in February 2022.
Despite the BJP winning the remaining three seats in 2021, the MLAs later switched to the TMC.
The by-elections were necessitated by Krishna Kalyani from Raiganj, Biswajit Das from Bagda and Mukut Mani Adhikari from Ranaghat Dakshin giving up their seats to contest the Lok Sabha elections.
