NEW DELHI: The Trinamool Congress on Thursday demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament on the situation in neighboring Bangladesh, especially in the context of concerns over minorities there.
The issue was raised in the Rajya Sabha after lunch by TMC parliamentary party leader Derek O’Brien, who sought permission to raise a point of order.
He quoted Rule 251 of the Rules of Procedure to suggest that the Prime Minister would come and make a statement on the Bangladesh issue.
Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, however, said it is not a point of order and did not allow O’Brien to proceed further.
The refusal was met with slogans by TMC MPs in the House of Representatives.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, TMC deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Sagarika Ghose said, “Parliament is in session, it is a very sensitive issue… the Prime Minister should come to Parliament and make a full statement and complete should clarify what the Government of India intends to do regarding the situation in Bangladesh,” she said.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev said the government should reveal what it did before the disaster Hindus in Bangladesh.
“The religious minorities there are facing atrocities, he (PM Modi) should speak about it and the political situation there,” she told PTI.
