Other popular flavors include shoe polish, pet food and TCP antiseptic cream.

But a fifth admit they are sometimes ashamed of their love of strange smells, including cigarette smoke and cat breath.

To celebrate the uniquely popular ‘new car’ scent, Fred Sirieix has teamed up with new and used car platform Auto Trader, to create a list of distinctive scent profiles for different car brands.

The fragrance notes are said to “reflect the essence of each brand, from the earthy richness of Land Rover to the nostalgic blend of British oak and tobacco leaf in Vauxhall.”

The First Dates star said: “Some people may not want to admit they like unusual scents.

“But taste is subjective, and one person’s rose may be another’s seaweed – we don’t like to judge.

“If people get their joy from the smell of a brand new car, who are we to say they’re wrong?”

The survey also found that 21 percent would like the ‘new car smell’ to last the entire time they own their new car.

Additionally, a quarter said they would buy an electric car to avoid fuel smells, while 14 percent would also go electric to make the ‘new car smell’ last longer.

And 31 percent hate it when that smell starts to disappear.

The study also found that 47 percent of adults have a connection between a strange smell and a positive memory.

While 63 percent claim that scents can influence their mood, and 45 percent may even be encouraged to buy something if it has the right aroma.

Britons are also much more likely to prefer natural fragrances over synthetic fragrances (68 percent compared to just five percent).

Citrus scents were voted the best scent category by 34 percent, followed by woody (33 percent) and floral (32 percent) aromas.

It also found that 46 percent of those who took part in the OnePoll.com survey associate certain smells with people they have met, and that 63 percent can be taken back to a childhood holiday just by a smell in their nostrils.

Erin Baker, editor-in-chief at Auto Trader, added: “People are often drawn to unusual scents because they evoke strong emotions or memories.

“When you hear the term ‘new car smell’ you can immediately imagine what that smells like.

“It is a very evocative scent that can bring joy, pride and relief the moment you step into your new car. We had a lot of fun trying to pinpoint exactly what those smells are using Fred’s discerning nose.”
