  • The Bulldogs coach led the club to a championship in 2020
  • He has decided not to request a contract extension until 2025

South Fremantle is in turmoil after their much-vaunted coach, Todd Curley, left the club.

The coach of the 2020 Premier League team has opted not to seek a contract extension at the end of the season, meaning his tenure as the longest-serving coach in South Fremantle’s history is over.

Curley has been in charge of the Bulldogs since 2014, leading the club to the finals in all but two seasons. He also led the team to three consecutive grand finals between 2019 and 2021.

His departure is the second shocking news within the WAFL in just 48 hours, after Peter German stepped down as Perth coach with immediate effect.

“On Monday I informed Head of Football Charlie Burke and Chairman Peter Christie that I will not be seeking a contract extension to remain as Head Coach of the South Fremantle Football Club beyond the 2024 season,” Curley said.

‘It was not an easy decision, however it became increasingly clear that I no longer have the time and responsibilities to look after my family, work full time and be the head coach of the South Fremantle Football Club.

‘I have been fortunate enough to be involved with this great club for 10 seasons, which I never expected when I took the job at the end of 2014. During that time we have had fantastic experiences and I have met fantastic people.

‘A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved with our programme during my time at the club; players, coaches, support staff, volunteers, board and management. You have all had an impact on creating the environment we wanted.

‘I will be eternally grateful for all of your dedication, resilience, expertise and friendship. ‘Finally, and most importantly, to Paula, Thalia, Aiden and my family, thank you for all of your love and support.

“Hopefully we can add something to the final chapter in the last few weeks of the 2024 season. After that I’m looking forward to a break and looking forward to what’s coming.”
