Trainer Jerome Reynier has published a major update on Awesome Royal Ascot winner Lazzat – who almost kicked a man’s head after the race.
Lazzat had just defeated the Japanese challenger Satono Reve to win the Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes last Saturday When he lost control.
First he threw Jockey James Doyle to the turf and then galloped loose.
Moments later, ITV images showed a bad helpless soul that tried to calm him down to make only centimeters of kicking in the head.
There were fears that the worrying scenes could lead to Doyle being disqualified because he could not weigh without his saddle – that was still tied to Lazzat’s back.
But luckily there was a happy ending for the Hathnan ownership horse, which is now at home in Reynier’s French garden and is doing well.
Speaking with Sky Sports Racing, the trainer admitted that Lazzat’s Meltdown was all his fault.
It was Reynier who stood in front of the sprinter with the cloth of the winner – and it was as if you waved a bull with a red cloth.
He said: “The horse is all good, nice and arranged and he doesn’t even seem tired. He is ready for more.
“Me and James laughed about it. It is my fault with the winning magazine. I got too close. I should have gone around the side.
“But we were so happy and it was a freak (accident).
“If I could have jumped on the horse with James, I would have done it!
“But it was a great moment to share with all my friends in the day.”
Lazzat was made 5-2 favorite for the July cup on the back of his 6F victory at ASCOT.
But Reynier confirmed that his next start will only be in August if he wants to defend his Maurice de Gheest -Kroon in Deauville.
He said: “This race will fit him well again and he will clearly be the favorite.
“On the European racing program – he doesn’t mind that the land is, so the plan would be to stay with group 1 Sprintraces and Haydock and Ascot can be the following goals for him.
“But we are aimed on August 10 for Deauville and the Maurice de Gheest.
“He is young and they often get better with age.
“Maybe the best should come.”
