Michael van Gerwen has announced that he splits with his wife Daphne and will take a break from tournaments.

The Darts -legend shared the update with fans on social media and admitted that he and Daphne are being confronted with a ‘difficult time’.

“It is with great sadness that I ask you that Daphne and I have decided to end our relationship,” wrote Van Gerwen.

‘As a result, I withdrew from the upcoming tournaments.

‘I am sorry that I have to disappoint my fans, but I trust that they will understand my decision.

‘We are confronted with a difficult time and ask you to respect our privacy in this difficult time.

They have two children together, a daughter Zoe, 7, and son Mike, 5.

Triple world champion of Gerwen made the announcement when he withdrew from the Dutch Darts Championship.

The 36-year-old would play his first game of the home event on Saturday evening.

Confirmation of the split comes only a few days after Van Gerwen was not eligible for the play-offs of the Premier League-Darts of this season.

Van Gerwen, a sevenfold winner of the Premier League, finished fifth in the rankings with only the top four ahead.

The darts legend needed a night’s win on Thursday to achieve a top four, but was beaten by Nathan Aspinall in the quarterfinals.

After the game, Aspinall admitted that there had been ‘a lot of emotion’ and claimed that Van Gerwen ‘did not look like’.

“There was a lot of emotion after walking away from the stage, I had to take myself away,” Aspinall told Sky Sports.

‘I spoke so much about Michael all week and will win tonight.

“I don’t know what’s going on, but he didn’t see himself anymore. Even on that stage he gave up. ‘
