Tripura police accused of failing to arrest criminals in lynching | India News – Times of India

Tripura Police an investigation has been launched into the lynching of a 22-year-old Gautam Das But even after three days, they still could not arrest the suspect, triggering a serious reaction across the state.
Reportedly, a few BJP leaders Yuva Morcha are accused of beating Goutam to death in the presence of police after he was handed over to his family at Natun Bazar police station in Gomati district of Tripura on September 10 in connection with a romantic relationship.
Justifying not to arrest the accused, SP Gomati Gautam Das Namit Pathak said, “We are waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain the cause of death before making an arrest as the body apparently did not have any marks of attack. However, the case has been followed very seriously.
According to the details of the incident, Gautam, a resident of Amarpur Chelagang of Gomati district, developed a relationship with a 19-year-old girl from Aravinda Colony area. Gautam eloped with the girl on September 5 and the family filed a complaint with the police.
Police rescued the girl from her friend Gautam Das’ house in Sabroom and took them to Natun Bazar. However, since both of them are adults, police handed them over to their families. As soon as Goutam came out of the police station, a group of youths led by a local BJP youth leader Saugata allegedly assaulted him severely in front of the police station in the presence of the uniformed man, the victim’s father alleged.
He stated that some leaders of Yuva Morcha took Gautam to the girl’s house for an amicable settlement and again beat him up severely. Later, Gautam was first admitted to Natun Bazar Hospital with serious injuries and then referred to Agartala Govt Medical College, where he died. Based on the complaint of the victim’s father, the police registered a case but did not arrest anyone.
Both the opposition CPI-M and Congress questioned the role of police, alleging, “Police and criminals are in cahoots with the patronage of the party in power.” Congress MP Sudip Roybarman criticised the police, saying, “Why did the police wait to arrest the culprits when there was a direct complaint? Does the law allow the police to wait for medical reports in murder cases before arresting them?”
Roybarman further alleged that in most of the criminal cases, ruling party leaders and their family members were accused and the police did not respond promptly. The people of Tripura also witnessed this in a few cases recently, including the lynching of a teacher in Udaipur in Gomati district.
Finally, almost after a week when the Chief Minister intervened, four persons were arrested and are now in jail. By keeping the CM in the dark, a group of BJP leaders in collusion with the police helped the criminals to discredit Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, he noted and added, “Every day we see how Dr Saha is getting into trouble at the hands of his partymen and leaders.”
