Tsunami warnings issued for Tonga and Samoa after volcanic eruption

The Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano has been erupting since Friday, according to the United States’ Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Tonga Meteorological Services also issued advisories for heavy rainfall, flash flooding and high winds in land and coastal waters.

Nearby, New Zealand’s official weather service said weather stations across the country had observed a “pressure surge” from the eruption on Saturday night.

The volcano was active from Dec. 20, but was declared dormant on Jan. 11, according to CNN affiliate RNZ.
