Two major airlines unveil new flight routes to beautiful capital, four years after UK halted air travel

Airlines EasyJet and British Airways have announced the launch of brand new flight routes to a ‘beautiful’ capital city.

Both airlines are adding flights to the Georgian capital Tbilisi, a city that EasyJet says is “renowned for its history, culture and natural beauty”.

These will be the first direct routes from the UK to Georgia since Wizz Air cancelled its flights to Georgia. Kutaisi at the beginning of the Covid pandemic four years ago, the Independent.

In a statement, easyJet praised the city’s “picturesque old town” as well as its “vibrant arts scene” and “historic sulphur baths”.

According to the airline, Tbilisi is an “untapped, affordable city break”.

Holidaymakers will get the chance to try “traditional Georgian cuisine” and wine lovers can enjoy “award-winning wines”, the budget airline said.

BA says: ‘Georgia proudly claims to be the birthplace of wine, with an 8,000-year history of winemaking that remains an important part of the culture today.’

The first EasyJet flight to Georgia, which lies between Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia, will depart from London Luton Airport on 1 April next year.

From then on, EasyJet will fly twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from the United Kingdom to Tbilisi during the summer season.

EasyJet has also launched routes to Tbilisi from Geneva, Switzerland and Milan Malpensa in Italy.

Ali Gayward, Country Manager UK at EasyJet, said: “We are delighted to announce a new route today to a brand new destination in our network, offering a unique direct connection between the UK and Tbilisi in Georgia from next summer.”

British Airways will launch its service to Tbilisi from London Heathrow from March 30, 2025, with flights four times a week.

Neil Chernoff, British Airways Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, said: “We are delighted to welcome Tbilisi back to our route network, following our last scheduled service in 2013.

‘We expect this to be a popular route with the leisure market, which has seen a strong recovery since 2019, but also with people looking to take advantage of direct flights to visit friends and family.

“We look forward to improving the connection between our two capitals next year.”
