Two simultaneous encounters underway in Poonch & Kathua of Jammu region, operations continue | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: After a gunfight broke out between security forces And terrorists in the Mendhar sector of Poonch Another clash took place on Sunday morning in remote Bani in Kathua district, officials said.
According to officials, a gunfight broke out between terrorists and security forces near Nuknali Bani area of Kathua district.
“During a search operation, terrorists fired at the search party of security forces in Nuknali area of Bani, Kathua. Seeing the forces moving closer to the suspected spot, they came under heavy fire, which was effectively exchanged,” the officials said.
“According to initial reports, two to three terrorists are believed to be in custody in the area.”
“Additional troops have been deployed to reinforce the cordon in the area,” the officials said. “Further details are awaited.”
Confirming the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said, “Based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists, search operation was initiated by police/security agencies in Bani (J/D or P/S Bani) Kathua area.”
“Contact has been made and a few rounds have been fired from both sides. Area cordoned off.”
Earlier today, this morning, a gunfight broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Mendhar belt of Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to police sources, based on intelligence, a search operation was launched in the forest area of Mendhar sector. Shots were fired at the search party, suspected to be three absconding terrorists, and contact was established at Kalaban, near Kalaban area, near Pathanateer in Katera village of Poonch district.
“It is said that a commander of a top terror group is among the detained terrorists,” sources said.
“A joint search operation was immediately launched by the Indian Army’s Romeo Force, Poonch Police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) and the CRPF.”
According to police sources, the area has been cordoned off as the shooting continues,” they added.
According to official sources, there has been no more shooting or contact since 12:00. However, an operation is underway at the shooting range and in the surrounding area to track down the terrorists who are hiding.
Earlier on September 13, there had been contact between security forces and terrorists in Surankote area of Poonch, with two soldiers killed and as many injured in a gunfight in Chatroo area of Kishtwar district on the same day.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened in Kishtwar, Doda, Rajouri, Poonch, Kathua and Udhampur districts, especially in the upper reaches, following the recent terror clashes between security forces and terrorists and in view of the first phase of the upcoming three-phase elections in J&K.
These are the first state assembly elections in J&K in 10 years and the first after the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the erstwhile state of J&K into two Union Territories (UTs).
On September 14, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) was injured during a gunfight between terrorists and security forces when an infiltration attempt was foiled by alert army troops in Noushera sector of Rajouri district.
On September 13, two soldiers were killed and several more injured in a gunfight in Chatroo area of Kishtwar district. At the same time, security forces clashed with terrorists in Surankote area of Poonch.
On September 11, two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists were neutralized during ‘OP KHANDARA’ carried out by the Rising Star Corps of the army, police and other belt forces. After a two-day search operation, the Rising Star Corps (9 Corps) found a huge war-like warehouse and ended the said operation on September 13.
Earlier on September 9, based on inputs from intelligence agencies and JK Police regarding an infiltration bid, an anti-infiltration operation was launched by the army troops and police in the general area of Lam, Noushera. Two terrorists were neutralized and a large quantity of war material including two AK-47s and one pistol were seized.
