'Unexpected results': Two Congress defeats, Rahul Gandhi's identical response
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appears to have found a stock response to election losses. The party suffered a humiliating defeat, first in Haryana and then in Maharashtra, wiping out its Lok Sabha gains. However, Rahul’s reaction to both defeats was identical and standard.
On Saturday, after the loss in Maharashtra, Rahul Gandhi wrote: “Maharashtra results are unexpected and we will analyze them in detail,” Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X on Wednesday evening. “Thank you to all the voter brothers and sisters of the state for their support and to all workers for their hard work,” he added.

On Jharkhand, where the JMM-led INDIA bloc retained power, he said: “Sincere thanks to the people of Jharkhand for giving a huge mandate to India. Hearty congratulations and best wishes to Chief Minister Hemant Soren ji, all Congress workers and JMM for this victory. This victory of the alliance in the state is a victory of protection of water, forest and land along with the Constitution.
The answer comes as déjà vu as Rahul Gandhi used the same term in October after Haryana’s defeat.
On October 9, a day after the results of the Haryana and J&K assembly elections were announced, Rahul Gandhi had written a similar message on X: “We are analyzing the unexpected results of Haryana.”
“We will inform the Election Commission about the complaints coming from many constituencies. Thank you to all the people of Haryana for their support and to our Babbar Sher workers for their tireless hard work. We will continue this fight for rights, for social and economic justice, for the truth, and will continue to raise your voices,” he wrote.

Despite being elected Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha just a few months ago, Gandhi’s party is back to square one after failing to make gains from the Lok Sabha boost.
In Maharashtra, where Congress got the largest share of seats in Maha Vikas Agadi, the party won 16 seats, while the BJP won a record 132 seats.
In Haryana, the Congress was in direct conflict with the BJP and ended up with 37 seats. The BJP won 48 seats, while the INLD won two seats.
In the aftermath, senior Congress leaders held a meeting with the Election Commission panel and submitted a memorandum. Congress leader Pawan Khera had said the party had sent a list of 20 seats in Haryana where candidates had filed written and oral complaints about electronic voting machines (EVMs) during counting of votes.
If the Congress leadership has analyzed the poll losses, it remains unclear. The party will face two more litmus tests in the assembly elections in Delhi and Bihar next year. Only the next election results will tell whether Congress can recover from its recent setbacks.
