Unrest in Manipur: Valley Body students force staff out of government offices
Ethnic violence has claimed more than 250 lives since May last year
GUWAHATI: Student volunteers from Meitei pressure group The Manipur Integrity Coordinating Committee (COCOMI) on Wednesday forced employees out of state and central government offices in the valley districts before locking the doors, blaming administrative failure for the recurring violence by militant Kuki groups .
The deployment of armed security personnel at these offices did not deter protesters from going beyond the cordon to enforce the shutdown announced by COCOMI, as the BJP-led government last week failed to keep its promise of a “comprehensive crackdown crackdown” against Kuki militants within the country. seven days. The organization also wants the state government to withdraw the controversial Afspa from six police station areas in five districts.
Dhanakumar Meitei, coordinator of COCOMI Students’ Front, urged government workers “not to come to office” in solidarity with the organization.
As the unrest escalated, the state government extended the ongoing mobile internet blackout for another two days till November 29 in nine districts – Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl and Jiribam. Police arrested a 46-year-old woman on November 16 for her alleged involvement in vandalism targeting homes of several MLAs and ministers.
The ongoing commotion in the valley districts was in contrast to six student organizations jointly appealing to the state government to reopen all educational institutions from Thursday “in the interest of future generations”. This comes a day after the government declared the closure of schools indefinitely.
