Asked for his thoughts after the game, a stripped Arteta said: “Well, in the first place congratulations to PSG for reaching the final.

“The assessment, I will make it if I am a little cooler, but the feedback I received is immediately from their bank is that we were much better than they do.

“If you look at the two games, who have been their best player on the field, the goalkeeper. He made a difference for them in the draw.

“I think we were very close, much closer than the results turned out, but unfortunately we are out.

“I am very proud of the players, what we did today, the way we started, how we deal with the pressure, the amount of pressure after 20 minutes that it should be 3-0.

“But there is something extra that you need in the competition to go your way and it didn’t.

Asked if his team is progressing, Arteta Answer: “100 percent, I don’t think there has been a better team in the competition so far.”

“But we’re out tonight and we earn a lot more in both games.

Arteta continued: “I am upset. We were very close for long periods of both games. We were much better than she did.

“But we are not there and that must hurt and if we want to win this competition and go there, we have to realize that and there are certain things that are on us.

“You should not just understand that we are gone. It’s not the way I look at it.”

Rice was just as disappointed and added: “It’s the lips. Such a dominant start. If you score one of those opportunities, the game changes upside down.

“It’s the small marginsTwo mistakes from us and two goals from them.

“It felt like it wasn’t meant. We could have scored three or four goals over the two legs, their goalkeeper has been incredible.

“In life you have to lose a few to win. You have to overcome some of these setbacks to grow. We grow like a team, we have to keep pushing.

“PSG has continued, but this will not define us.

“If we get our players back, we become a much stronger outfit. We have done the entire season without five or six of our best players.

“We gave it everything. Everyone believed completely, you could see that from the first whistle, on another night we may score two or three. We had the chances we didn’t score and it was a real kick in the teeth.

“We really wanted this, but we will continue to push. We are all desperate, that’s why we play football. We want to win trophies, but for whatever reason these last two years is not intended.

“We got very close, it’s not good enough, Arsenal deserves to win trophies.

“It hurts, the boys and the manager, it’s difficult. It’s a semi -final, we wanted to be in Munich.”
