In his viral videoTikTok user Alex (@alex_thevet) discussed the life expectancy of different races.

He cited a scientific report that found larger breeds are 20% more likely to die prematurely than smaller dogs.

With this in mind, the veterinarian named the breeds with the shortest lifespans.

Alex said that Caucasian Shepherd dogs live an average of only 5.4 years.

He also said that the Presa Canario is expected to live for about 7.7 years.

And finally, the Cane Corso breed lives on average just over eight years.

The vet also explained that dogs with flat faces, such as French Bulldogs, have a 40% higher risk of early death compared to other dogs.

This is likely due to respiratory problems, resulting in an average lifespan of 9.9 years for affected breeds, compared to the expected 13.1 years for a Border Collie.

The dog expert analyzed even more statistics about the lifespan of dogs.

He explained that female dogs generally live longer than males, but “not by much”, with the former living an average of 12.7 years and the latter 12.4 years.

Vet Reveals Worst Dog Breeds to Own

The research Alex referenced also found that mixed breeds live 1.2 years longer than a similarly sized purebred dog.

He added that neutered dogs tend to live longer than non-neutered dogs.

Alex also revealed the breeds with the longest average lifespans, including Miniature Dachshunds (14 years), Tibetan Spaniels (15.2 years) and Lancashire Heelers (15.4 years).

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the information in the comments.

“We had a Tibetan Spaniel as a child. He was 19 when we had to put him to sleep,” wrote one viewer.

Dog Breeds That Cost You a Fortune in Vet Bills

Alex, the vet, previously shared the top breeds that cost owners a fortune in healthcare costs.

  • Shar-Pei: Their skin folds can lead to serious infections, as bacteria settle and fester. They are also prone to ear infections.
  • French Bulldogs: Their flat faces lead to breathing problems, overheating and reflux. They also suffer from skin infections and eye problems.
  • Great Danes: The breed is prone to a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy.
  • Dachshunds: Their body shape makes them prone to many health problems.

“No matter how long a dog lives, all of us who love our dogs can agree that they never live long enough,” another follower said.

“Two of my terrier-type dogs lived to be 22 and 21 years old, and another died at 16 from cancer,” a third person said.

“I wish I could tie my lifespan to my dogs,” wrote another TikTok user.

“I have Tibetan Spaniels and you still see them regularly at shows when they are 15 years old,” said one viewer.

“They have been known to live for over 20 years. And they are usually very healthy! They are a great breed.”
