The CEO of Volkswagen, Thomas Schäfer, is registered to state that the brand intends to propel his iconic GTI badge in the electric era with the launch of the ID 2 GTI.
All-in on the hot Liège proposals, Auto -author reports That VW also plans a fully electric version of the ninth generation Golf, complete with a GTI-badged itteration, with a “entire group of GTI” models that will follow afterwards.
The first EV to receive the performance treatment is a reach of the topping of the ID 2, which was shown in the 2023 ID GTI concept car.
That design study wore all classic GTI characteristics, including an iconic steering wheel with flat bottom, a low ride height and aggressive bodywork, as well as the famous GTI badges.
Schäfer told Auto Car that his experience with an early prototype vehicle suggests that the upcoming electric GTI model will be “a sample car”.
There is no set-in-stone date for the first GTI-Badged EV, but the ID 2 will be launched early next year, which happens to be the 50-year anniversary of the launch of the original MK1 Golf GTI.
GTI must be hot but be feasible
While speaking with Auto Car, CEO Thomas Schäfer said that the main goal with electric GTI models is to make them clearly feel different than the standard car, including the handling, the sound and ensuring that they are exciting to drive.
So far, Hyundai has proven that this can be done with the formidable Ioniq 5NBut the enormous weight of technology needed to make it fun to throw around a racing circuit also means that it is phenomenally expensive.
The GTI badge has always been for feasible performance, with the type of price tag that means that people with even a snuff of disposable income can think about owning one.
Although there is not a word about the technology that will support the coming family of GTI models, Schäfer said in the launch of the ID GTI concept that the cars remain “sporty, iconic, technologically progressive and accessible”, and is suitable for daily driving.
So far, Volkswagen electric vehicles have received a lukewarm response, with early ID models that prove faintly, soulless and easily forgetful.
The introduction of GTI will hopefully bring part of that VW twing in its fully electrical reach, while early view of the upcoming ID 2 proves that the German brand is back on top … and Back to physical buttons.
