Want a super rare Hasselblad? A new ‘Earth Explorer’ edition of the X2D 100C has been launched… for $14,000
In a move normally associated with Leica, Hasselblad has launched an ultra-exclusive edition of one of its flagship cameras – the ‘Earth Explorer’ X2D 100C – and I want it bad. The 100MP professional medium format camera is available now in a Tundra Brown colorway, reportedly inspired by the Swedish brand’s Scandinavian landscapes.
Whatever the inspiration, I’m all for the new version of the X2D 100C, which has only been made in 1,000 units worldwide. The stumbling block? It costs a whopping $13,999 / £12,749 (we don’t have pricing for Australia yet) – almost double the original version, which most people can’t even afford.
While the camera is essentially identical to the original, aside from the stunning new color scheme and unique “Earth Explorer” welcome screen when you boot up the device, the limited edition also comes with a bunch of accessories included in the box, so the extra price may not be as much as it seems.
Along with the camera, you’ll find the XCD 55mm f/2.5 lens – it’s a super-sharp walkaround lens with a 43mm full-frame equivalent focal length – a free strap, extra batteries and charger, plus a Hasselblad UV filter (see included accessories in the image below). In other words, all the gear you need to get out there and explore the country around you.
All in all, you pay a small premium compared to the original camera and lens separately, but it’s not much different. Moreover, this is a super limited and super attractive edition.
I’m a huge fan of the Hasselblad X2D 100C, giving it a 4.5 star rating in an extensive review . Its 100MP medium-format sensor outperforms professional full-frame mirrorless cameras – trust me, I’ve made the comparisons. I also love the refreshingly minimalist design, which has only been further improved in this new Tundra Brown version.
Where the Hasselblad disappoints is with mediocre battery life – so those extra batteries will come in handy – and sluggish autofocus. Oh, and if you’re into video, the X2D 100C isn’t for you, as that one is for stills only.
However, if you are an outdoor photographer, you will be hard-pressed to beat the image quality and design of the X2D 100C. In this exclusive edition, the design is even more attractive.
The Hasselblad X2D 100C Earth Edition is available now, but only at select retailers due to its extremely limited numbers. See above for your region’s options.
