Wants good ties with India, but they must be based on fairness and equality: Yunus | India News – Times of India

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday said his country wants good relations with India and other neighbouring countries.
In a televised speech, Yunus said after taking oath as head of the government, many foreign leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharifcalled to congratulate him. “We want good relations with India and other neighbouring countries, but those relations should be based on fairness and equality,” he said. Yunus said Bangladesh has already started high-level bilateral cooperation talks with India to tackle floods. “I have also taken the initiative to revive Saarc to enhance regional cooperation in South Asia,” Yunus said.
Saarc includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. “We want the world to recognize Bangladesh as a respected democracy.”
Yunus said the interim government has taken steps to form six commissions to reform six key sectors, including the electoral system, in a bid to reform Bangladesh. The other sectors are police administration, judiciary, anti-corruption commission, public administration and the constitution. The commissions are expected to start their functions from October 1 and they are expected to complete their work within the next three months, Yunus said.
Yunus stressed that the main goal of the reforms is to ensure equal rights for all, saying: “We still have a lot of work to do. We want to work together towards the same goal. We want to create a structure that will allow the untapped talents in us, especially in our new generation, to emerge without obstacles, with the support of the state and society.” PTI
