Warhammer 40,000: Darktide released a new soundtrack volume this week – here’s an exclusive preview of tracks composed by Jesper Kyd
Warhammer 40,000: Dark Tide is one of the best 40K experiences in gaming right now, and what brings it to life is its expertly crafted soundtrack – which is only further expanded with a third installment on the way.
Secrets of the Machine God is Dark tide‘s latest free update and includes a bunch of quality-of-life improvements, as well as new weapons, a new in-game event, and a brand new mission – but it also coincides with the release of a new soundtrack volume. We’ve gotten an exclusive first look (or rather, first hear) at two tracks from the upcoming Volume 3, and can also share what composer Jesper Kyd has to say about composing the music for the latest update to bloom.
“For Secrets of the Machine God, FatShark needed music for the Mechanicus order and we decided to use a vocoder to represent the machine spirit element in this music,” he says.
“So I went all out on a vintage Roland vocoder and created a spiritually infused vocal performance for the score. I wanted the song ‘The Machine Spirit’ to sound like some kind of spiritual seance.”
This fits perfectly with Darktide’s grim atmosphere, aesthetic and setting. You can listen to them for yourself below.
‘The Machine Spirit’ is an atmospheric piece that you immediately feel ‘sounding’ in the metal structures of Tertium as you go around corners and stroll through dirty corridors.
‘Reactivation’, on the other hand, has the rhythmic sounds and clatter you might imagine from a metallic engine structure in Tertium, with an accelerating beat and tempo that builds the tension as the piece progresses.
You can pre-save Volume 3 of the soundtrack ahead of its full release later this week on July 4th.
For those with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, Dark tide remains a fun way to get that Warhammer hit – especially while we wait for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 will be released later this year on September 9, 2024.
