A GROOM left people shuddering after he agreed to his future wife’s wedding dress and demanded she wear something ‘simple’.

Katie Wolford, 25, admitted it was “pretty unconventional” to bring her fiancé to the appointment, but said: “That’s who we are in a nutshell.”

“We’re going to work this out no matter what,” added her groom, Mike Sliter.

“We’re a perfect fit for each other, so I’m not worried about some stupid tradition.”

There is an age-old superstition surrounding the wedding dress of the groom and his bride.

But Katie and Mike didn’t let this deter them.

The couple, originally from Ohio (US), met through their work in a niche sector known as industrial organizational psychology.

Katie’s wedding dress fitting was aired on TLC’s Say Yes To The Dress, with producers for the show revealing that she even burst into tears at one point.

But that wasn’t Mike’s fault, but the fact that the bridal shop didn’t have her dream dress in the right size.

Mike had strong ideas about the style of clothing Katie would wear down the aisle.

“I don’t agree with the bling,” he said.

“I don’t want anything shiny, and nothing big and airy.

“I just want something simple and white, maybe with a flower.”

The clothing store employees were concerned about Mike’s “strong opinions.” One commented, “We’ve got a fox in the hen house.”

The groom suggested one dress that he wanted Katie to try on, but the design fell through because of its “plainness.”

How to choose the perfect wedding dress?

Wedding season is in full swing, but when it comes to picking out the perfect dress, most brides-to-be are probably clueless.

Josie Griffiths, deputy editor of Fabulous Digital and bride-to-be, is getting married in August 2024 and has shared her top tips…

  1. Give yourself time – unless you are a sample size, dresses can take months to arrive. Don’t stress yourself out by looking too late, in my opinion, dress shopping should be second on your list, right after you find a venue.
  2. Visit multiple stores. You are not supposed to buy anything on your first visit.
  3. But not too many – just like an asshole who can’t stop swiping on Tinder, too much choice won’t help you find The One.
  4. Bring people with you – women who are honest but also give you credit, unlike the mean family members in Say Yes To The Dress, and ideally people from different parts of your life who don’t automatically say the same thing. I went shopping with my mother and two best friends, who didn’t know each other and had different styles.
  5. Think again – I went back to the store before I made my final decision on the dress I chose and tried it on again with my second favorite just to make sure I was sure. It’s an expensive purchase and you can’t return it like you can with your next Asos order, so take some time to think about it.

“I think I did a really bad job,” he admitted afterwards.

“It didn’t suit her.

“It didn’t flatter her figure or anything.”

When Katie put on a dress she loved and thought Mike would appreciate, he complained that there was a “sparkle” from the gems scattered across the skirt.

He described the design as “confusing” and even complained that another dress she tried on was made of “loud” fabric.

Katie couldn’t find the right dress at the appointment.

“I think I need to sit down for a moment and get myself into a good position,” she mused.
