Watch: Mallikarjun Kharge and Jagdeep Dhankar at deadlock over Adani issue in Rajya Sabha
NEW DELHI: The winter session of Rajya Sabha was adjourned on Monday, soon after Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Speaker Jagdeep Dhankar entered into a standoff over the ‘Gautam Adani issue’, which the latter raised in the Upper House , despite previous comments. objections.
‘Sir, the discussion about Article 267 is very important. If you suspend today’s business, we can do the Adani bribery case that affects the entire country,” Kharge said, adding, “Modi ji is supporting him (Adani).”
Shutting down all discussions under Article 267, Dhankar replied: “Nothing is on record.”

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar dismissed thirteen notices under Article 267, including seven seeking discussion on the US indictment in connection with an alleged bribe of US$265 million to government officials by the Adani group.
Despite this, Congress and the left parties pushed for a debate, which eventually led to the House of Representatives adjourning for the day.
After the suspension of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the Congress accused the government of being “afraid” of the Adani issue and refusing to hold a discussion on it.
“The Modani issue has today rocked both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. INDIA parties called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee investigation into the Modani scam – the case of which has been strengthened by the recent charges against Adani’s bribery and suppression of information from Indian and US regulators,” the grand old spokesperson said party, Jairam Ramesh.
Other notices under Article 267, which seeks to suspend the listed company to address urgent matters, include demands for discussions on ongoing violence in Manipur, clashes in UP’s Sambhal district and special assistance to the flood-affected Wayanad district in Kerala.
Gautam Adani and seven others were indicted by US authorities last week for allegedly agreeing to pay approximately $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials. The charges are related to efforts to win contracts that could generate $2 billion in profits over the next 20 years, including to develop the nation’s largest solar energy project.
In response, the Adani Group has denied all allegations, calling them baseless, and vowed to “take all possible legal action.”
