Watch the moment model Iskra Lawrence gives birth in the bath at home
ISKRA Lawrence has hit back at trolls who criticized her for sharing footage of her home birth on Instagram.
The British model, 34, who is already mother to four-year-old son Alpha, recently welcomed a second child with partner Philip Payne.
Iskra told her more than 5 million Instagram followers that she wanted to share “intimate, unfiltered moments” from her daughter’s home birth because she “regretted” not documenting her experience with Alpha.
She tagged Philip, her midwife and doula, in the caption of the video of her pushing her baby into a bathtub.
The clip captured the moment her daughter was born, felt her first sensation and had her umbilical cord cut.
“Birth is a miracle, I am forever grateful to have my babies and @philipapayne,” Iskra said.
“I hope I can inspire you to see birth as something magical and that you and your baby know exactly what to do and that you are able to do it.”
Despite asking viewers to be “kind and open-minded,” trolls flooded the comments section arguing that the birth video was inappropriate for social media.
“How tf [the f**k] is this allowed on ig,” one person said.
“Unpopular opinion: Some intimate moments don’t need to be vividly shared with millions of strangers,” wrote another.
“Some moments should be kept private,” a third commented. “Just a family affair.
“I have a video of my birth and I couldn’t even imagine sharing it with the world. Not just because of what’s in it, but because it’s special to me.”
Iskra shared a collection of photos from her home birth in a follow-up post, confessing that she was aware her video would be “controversial.”
“Birth is not a shame. It is the most beautiful, original and powerful experience I have ever had,” she said.
“During childbirth, I have never been so alive, so connected to a higher power or able to completely surrender to something bigger than me.
“My body is not there to be attractive or appropriate to the awkward men who made these comments on my home birth video.
“And I hope you know that we never have to dim our lights, never have to apologize for being bold or make decisions based on the opinions of others.”
How do women’s rates change after giving birth?
TO SAY that the body changes during pregnancy and childbirth is an understatement.
During the nine months it takes the body to deliver a baby, it undergoes some tremendous physical changes.
Considering how different the body looks during pregnancy, it’s not surprising that there are some lasting changes.
And in some ways that never happens, said Dr Rachel Ward, a GP at Woodlands Medical Centre, Derby.
1. Wider ribcage and hips
“During pregnancy, to accommodate a growing baby and prepare for delivery, our bodies produce a hormone called relaxin,” she explained.
Relaxin works by increasing flexibility and movement in our joints and ligaments.
“Many women notice that the shape of their pelvis and rib cage remains different after pregnancy,” says Dr. Rachel.
It often happens that you need a different bra size due to a change in breast circumference, according to the expert.
“This is a reminder of the changes your body has made to accommodate your baby and it is nothing to worry about,” she added.
2. Change in skin color
During pregnancy, most women experience changes in the skin as it stretches to accommodate your bump and the breasts become larger.
“It’s not uncommon to develop stretch marks.
“Although they often fade over time and turn a shiny, pale color, depending on your skin tone, they won’t disappear completely,” said Dr. Rachel.
“Some people don’t like the way stretch marks look, but it is an incredibly common change that we see in many people,” she added.
3. A change in the shape of the breasts
Breasts enlarge during pregnancy as the breast tissue prepares to produce milk.
And shortly after birth, they will start producing milk and become swollen, Dr. Ward explains.
“Whether you choose to breastfeed or not, it’s likely that the shape, size and way your breasts look and feel will be different after pregnancy than they were before,” she added.
“This isn’t a problem, but it’s important that we learn what the new normal is for our breasts so we can stay aware of the breasts and pick up on changes that could be cancer.”
Iskra said she wanted to be an example of a “positive, peaceful” home birth for people who may have never seen one before.
She added that all mothers who have given birth are “literal superheroes.”
Thousands of people liked the post and praised her for being vulnerable on the social media platform.
One person described her as “empowering,” while another said her video was “helpful” for their own birth.
“@iskra you are an absolute warrior and an absolute legend for sharing the raw reality of childbirth!” a third commented.
“It’s not X-rated and you’re not completely naked… You’re beautiful, your family is beautiful and please keep doing what you do best! We love you for that.”
