The cyclone, which made landfall near Pondicherry between 10:30 PM and 11:30 PM IST, brought winds of 70-80 kmph, with gusts of up to 90 kmph.
Following the impact of the cyclone, parts of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu received heavy rainfall, leading to a rise in water levels in the dams. In Tamil Nadu, heavy rains caused the Veedur Dam to overflow, a video showed, putting 10 villages in Villupuram district at risk of flooding.
The IMD said Fengal is expected to weaken into a deep depression in the coming hours as it moves west-southwestward. “CS Fengal was over the same region, 30 km north of Cuddalore and 40 km east of Villupuram. It will slowly move westward and gradually weaken into a deep depression over 6 hours,” IMD said.
In Chennai, beaches experienced high tides and rough seas early in the morning. The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) has issued a weather forecast predicting “isolated heavy to very heavy” rainfall in the city on Sunday.
Earlier, operations at the Chennai airport were halted on Saturday due to strong winds and heavy rains from Cyclone Fengal, leading to several flight cancellations and hundreds of passengers.
