We have a fight with the neighbors after they hacked into ours

A man has been left furious after his neighbors hacked into his new fence to set up a ‘revenge fence’ of their own.

He explained that they had already had problems with the people next door, and had to call the police when they got into an argument about installing a “four meter vinyl fence” – despite the fact that it was apparently on their “property line”.

The previous problem with the neighbors means he feels like he can’t approach them this time.

But he was baffled as to how to handle the situation and took to Reddit to ask for advice.

“About a year ago we had new vinyl fencing installed,” he wrote.

“A week ago, the neighbors behind us installed a new 6-foot wooden privacy fence and cut into our fencing on our property line.”

He shared photos of the point where their vinyl fencing was cut to fit the new wood fencing.

And that’s not the only problem he faces with the fence.

“The fence is also facing the wrong way,” he sighed.

“If they installed it correctly, they wouldn’t have to cut the vinyl of our fence to put their posts in!”

He concluded by asking “what options” they have to “repair our vinyl fence where they literally cut it.”

He also wondered whether they should get their fencing company involved, or even consider taking legal action.

But there were countless people all suggesting the same thing, that he should “get a survey done.”

“There’s no point in doing anything until you know absolutely who owns what here,” the person noted.

“Maybe you’re all wrong, based on factors like easements.”

“Honestly, other than the property line, you should install your fence with the nice side facing out,” argued another.

“Just because my neighbors are stuffy and damaging my fence, I would report them for that!”

A third said the “untreated, unstained” wooden fence installed by the man’s neighbors “would be ugly AF in six months.”

The five main reasons why neighbors argue

A survey by Compare the Market shows the main reason for the British neighbors’ quarrel

  1. Broken Fences – at the top of the board was broken fences and whose responsibility it was to fix them
  2. Parking: one of the biggest causes of neighbor disputes: 54.1 percent of people have problems with people parking in front of their home, parking lot or driveway
  3. Trees – complaints about the neighbour’s tree destroying your garden path were also common; almost half of the participants found it frustrating
  4. Garbage wars – open-air garbage etiquette continues to cause the most heated debates among neighbors
  5. Nosy neighbors – some people have their eyes and ears ready to take a peek and cause trouble for others

However, someone else hit back, writing: ‘You should allow fences to air dry before staining, sealing or painting them.

“Same with decks.”

“Where I live you have to let it stick in, but if it sticks in more than 4 inches the other party has the option to claim that land up to the fence as their own,” another explained.

“Crazy stuff, but I heard it straight from the building inspector’s mouth!”

“That sucks, but I’m not sure I’d do anything more than complain,” someone else said.

“The wood fencing has effectively replaced the vinyl.

“The picket fence seems like a bigger, better fence to me.

“This means that limiting the damage comes into play – which means that you can only recover damages that are reasonable. Yes, your fence is damaged.

“But that only matters if your fence still functioned as a fence, and in this case it did not.

“Right now your fence is nothing but a decoration. Your fence could fall over and there would still be a fence.

“You could pull your fence away, and there would still be a fence.

“You wanted a fence there, and you got a fence there. I would leave this one alone.’

“Sell your fence and enjoy the better fun,” another advised.
