‘We urge India to…’: What US said during PM Modi-Putin meeting in Russia | India News – Times of India
The United States has appealed to India as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Russiato send a clear signal to Moscow that any solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine must adhere to the principles of the UN Charter, which guarantee the territorial integrity of all member states, including Ukraine.
In response to questions about Modi’s visit to Moscow, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that India is a strategic partner with whom the US engages in an open and honest dialogue, including addressing concerns about India-Russia relations.
“We met with Modi, as well as (Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor) Orban, as well as (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy. We felt that was an important step to take. And we would urge India, as we would any country that engages with Russia, to make it clear that any solution to the conflict in Ukraine must be one that respects the UN Charter, that respects the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the sovereignty of Ukraine,” Miller said.
Miller said he would closely study Prime Minister Modi’s public statements to find out what topics were discussed during the visit.
“I will look at the public remarks of Prime Minister Modi to see what he was talking about. But as I said, we have made it clear to India directly that we are concerned about their relationship with Russia. So we hope that India and any other country, when they engage with Russia, will make it clear that Russia must respect the UN Charter, must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” he said in response to a question.
On Monday evening, Putin welcomed Modi to his official residence in Novo-Ogaryovo for a private meeting, where he praised the Indian leader for his efforts to promote India’s progress. This is Modi’s first visit to Russia since the country invaded Ukraine more than two years ago.
