We visited Disney World’s new Tiana’s Bayou Adventure attraction before it opened to the public. This is our verdict

Die-hard Disney fans have given their verdict on the new Tiana-themed log flume ride ahead of its official opening to the public later this month.

Molly and Alan McCormack, who run the YouTube channel Mammoth Club with cohost Max La Due, ventured to Walt Disney World in Florida to check out Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

The ride, which updates Tiana’s storyline from the 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog, occupies a space once occupied by Splash Mountain.

Some Disney fans see it as a fitting replacement for its predecessor, which was themed around the 1946 Disney film Song of the South. The film was full of racist clichés about African Americans and life on the plantations.

Molly and Alan state in their YouTube review that while Splash Mountain was also beloved and brought back memories since it was installed in 1989, the new and improved attraction centered around Disney’s first black princess ticks many boxes.

After giving the water ride a try, Molly says, “No matter what you think of Splash Mountain, everyone felt unwelcome.

‘[Tiana’s Bayou Adventure]…was such a joyful and beautiful ride. The colors are great, the animatronics are great.

“It still feels like a classic nostalgia ride… it feels weirdly like Splash Mountain, but better.”

In their YouTube video, Molly and Alan give viewers a tour of the attraction, which premieres on June 28, from start to finish.

In one scene they check out the gift shop and show off some of the products on offer.

Some of the notable items include jewelry, hot sauce made by a famous New Orleans chef and a $15,000 painting of the cast of The Princess and the Frog, completed by a local Louisiana artist.

In another part of the YouTube tour, the couple shows off the greenery outside the ride, with a lily pond, small community farm, mature plants and swamp trees to set the scene.

Returning to the ride, Molly and Alan explain that it’s the same as Splash Mountain “in terms of the 50-foot drop and the log flume vehicles that take you on, but it has a whole new story that revolves around Princess Tiana.”

“Tiana’s Bayou Adventure takes place after the events of The Princess and the Frog… and Tiana is okay,” Alan said.

As they tour some of the different sets before lining up for the attraction, the couple are clearly impressed with the attention to detail and the thoughtful way each item has been designed.

At one point they point to a framed letter on the wall of Tiana’s office, written by Prince Naveen, while in another room they find themed posters and photos of Tiana’s family.

During the video tour, one of the Disney ‘imagineers’ and assistant construction managers named Addison gives Molly and Alan an overview of the ride.

He explains: ‘I think you’ll notice that there’s been a significant amount of change because it’s a whole new story here at Tiana’s.

‘It’s the same exterior, but it’s a completely new location and a completely new use for the place itself.

‘We are actually here in the outside gardens for Tiana’s Co-op and that’s a company called Tiana Foods. They grow their own food here, process it and ship it.

‘As you’ll experience as you walk through the line, then descend into the salt mine, which has been purchased by Tiana’s Foods Co-op, you’ll go on a journey to help Tiana find one last missing ingredient for their big party to kick off Mardi Gras.

“My absolute favorite part without a doubt is when you descend the first drop and enter the Bayou for the first time.

“You see everyone’s favorite alligator, Lewis, trying to tell you about something that’s right next to you. And then you turn that corner and you see an amazing demonstration of all the new technology that we have.”

After trying out the attraction themselves, Molly and Alan gave it a rave review.

Molly concludes, “Go go into this with an open mind. It happens very often that when there is a change or an attraction is replaced or redesigned people go there because they love the predecessor they go into it negatively.

“So even if Splash was your favorite ride, even if you have a lot of nostalgia for that ride or classic family memories… Don’t blame Princess Tiana.

‘You can have good memories of Splash and also be excited and embrace what I think is a very good attraction.

‘I think the music is beautiful, the animatronics are fantastic, it’s colorful and this new use has given the space some much-needed new life.’

The YouTube creators also advise parkgoers to ride the log flume “multiple times to really fully understand all the details,” and to save time in line by opting for Lightning Lane expedited passes.
