Wealthy Democrats are spending millions on homes in London to flee America after Trump’s resounding victory

Wealthy Democrats have started snapping up luxury homes in London to flee America after Donald Trump’s landslide election victory.

Buying agents have noticed an increase in interest from wealthy Americans looking to buy London property as a “safety net” for Trump’s return to the White House.

Becky Fatemi, executive partner at Sotheby’s International Realty, said she received five calls in just two days from wealthy Americans looking to move after the election.

“These are people who say, ‘He’s here, and he’s here for the next four years, and I don’t want to be, so these are the dates we’re flying over.’ All these five are coming here in the next week,” Ms Fatemi told the newspaper Telegraph on the weekend.

Marco Previero, director at corporate relocation company R3Location, said London is a desirable location for wealthy Democrats who feel it is “more aligned with Democratic values” because of the left-wing Labor government.

This made London a “safe haven” for those unhappy with Trump’s election victory, Previero said.

He added that R3 has seen double the number of requests in the past two months from Americans looking to buy in London as they look for a “safety net” from a Trump presidency.

According to Mr Previero, 20 clients – each spending between £2 million and £20 million ($2.5 million and $25 million) on their second homes – have already inquired about R3’s services.

Ms Fatemi also said her team had received 30 percent more inquiries from US buyers hoping to acquire a UK property in the past two months, compared to the same period in 2023.

She said an American family arrived in Britain on Thursday, just one day after the election results were announced.

The family is staying in an Airbnb while they look for a place to rent – with a big budget of £70,000 ($90,000) – and schools for their three children to start in January.

Luxury rental properties are in particularly high demand as customers want to get across the pond quickly and avoid the huge stamp duties that foreigners face after purchasing expensive properties, Ms Fatemi said.

Under Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ budget, which added an extra 2% to the stamp duty surcharge for additional homes, a foreigner buying a £10 million ($13 million) second home could be hit with a tax bill of more than £1 .8 million ($2.3 million).

Will Watson, who runs the purchasing agency The Buying Solution, said he is currently working with five different American families in the hope of exiting the political situation in the US by looking for a new home in London worth more than £10 million.

Mr. Previero added that R3 has seen double the number of requests in the past two months from Americans looking to buy in London as they seek a “safety net” from a Trump presidency.

He added that he also had six questions from other families.

Mr Watson told the Telegraph: ‘Trump is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Americans say, “You know what? I just couldn’t live under another one of his conditions.”

This comes after a host of American celebrities vowed they would leave the US if Trump won. Numerous stars have left the US for Britain in recent months due to fears about the political landscape, abortion rights and gun violence.

Actress Minnie Driver, 54, told The Times of London in July that she had returned to Britain after living in Los Angeles for almost three decades.

And at the time, she revealed that if Trump were re-elected, it would be difficult for her to return to America.

‘If I lived in the red [Republican] it says, no, I couldn’t do that [return]she said. “But when you live in California, you’re somewhat isolated.

‘But do you want to live in a bubble? Are you running from the fire or are you going back to help?’

British star Sophie Turner, 28, told Harper’s Bazaar last month that she realized she had to “fuck leave” America because of gun violence and the overturning of Roe v Wade.

The Game of Thrones alum lived in the United States with Joe Jonas and their two children Willa and Delphine. She returned to her native Britain in the wake of their bitter split last year.

Others have quit in recent months for the benefit of their children, including Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, while others including Hugh Jackman and Renee Zellweger are reportedly considering a move.
