Wear OS 4 support is quietly rolling out to the Xiaomi Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro – Here’s what’s new
Multiple users of the Xiaomi Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro are reporting that Google’s Wear OS 4 operating system is gradually rolling out to their devices, bringing with it a number of useful tweaks and new features.
Xiaomi followed Samsung in integrating Wear OS into its smartwatch devices in late 2023 with the arrival of the Watch 2 Pro, followed by the cheaper Watch 2 unveiled in February 2024. But while the introduction of Wear OS marked a big change for Xiaomi’s smartwatch models, the company has been strangely quiet about this latest update.
As noted by Gadgets and wearablesUsers of both the Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro are reporting the rollout of Wear OS 4 on Reddit. Early reports indicate that this is a fairly gradual rollout of the update, limited to a few select regions including the UK, Poland, and Spain.
Users who have successfully installed the update also appear to be doing it manually, rather than when Xiaomi prompts them. If you own a Xiaomi Watch 2 or Watch 2 Pro, you can check for the update yourself by visiting the Firmware update screen.
Wear OS 4 coming to Xiaomi
Considering the introduction of Wear OS is a pretty significant update for the Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro, it seems a little odd that Xiaomi didn’t announce the rollout of Wear OS 4 ahead of time. It’s possible that the company did plan to let users know, but the software rolled out earlier. It’s also possible that the release of Wear OS 5 this year has overshadowed the launch a little, and Xiaomi doesn’t want to advertise that it’s lagging behind.
As for what’s new in Wear OS 4 on Xiaomi, early adopters are reporting new fonts and icons, as well as support for a number of newer watch faces. Other users have also reported a variety of bug fixes and general stability improvements, including a specific fix for a Do Not Disturb sync issue.
While Xiaomi’s Watch offerings may not be considered the best smartwatches on the market, they are considerably cheaper than alternatives from Apple and Samsung. As noted, Wear OS support remains a significant shift, and opens up the appeal of Xiaomi’s models to a much wider range of Android users. Importantly, unlike Huawei, these smartwatch devices are available for sale in the US.
