Weather in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane: Warning issued

Australians are being warned to brace for even wilder weather with heavy rain, damaging winds and thunderstorms set to bring a wet end to spring.

A new round of dangerous thunderstorms is forecast for parts of Victoria, NSW and Queensland as a cold front moves across the country’s south-eastern states.

There is a chance of thunder in Sydney and Brisbane on Monday and an average chance of showers in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, rising heat and increased fire risks are expected in southeastern Australia from Friday, with temperatures expected to rise into the high 30s and low 40s.

In the Harbor City, a severe thunderstorm Sunday evening led to flight cancellations and removed a road sign near the Harbor Bridge.

The road slab, measuring one meter square and made of concrete and steel, came loose during the storm after 8pm, damaging 25 cars and causing a two-hour traffic delay for motorists on the Harbor Bridge.

NSW Transport Minister Josh Murray apologized to motorists and said Transport for NSW would pay to repair damage to cars caused by the road plate.

“It was a nightmare,” Murray told 2GB’s Ben Fordham on Monday.

“I would like to apologize to anyone whose car was damaged, or anyone else who was caught up for about two hours.”

Meanwhile, travelers at Sydney Airport were hit with more than 20 flight cancellations due to the storm activity.

The State Emergency Service responded to 278 calls across the state, including 81 in Sydney, 50 in southern NSW and 49 in western NSW.

The high winds also caused scattered power outages in Sydney, including Auburn, Central Coast and around Newcastle.

Showers are forecast for Tasmania early in the week, with severe thunderstorms expected to threaten southern Queensland on Monday.

Tropical moisture is forecast to bring heavy rain to the west coast of Western Australia on Tuesday.
