Wedding guest shows off sparkly outfit – but people think it belongs in Ibiza
A wedding guest has sparked outrage after wearing an embellished princess dress that they say resembles a beach party outfit.
Trendy fashionista Ellie Frances took to TikTok to proudly show off the gorgeous outfit she was wearing to a wedding, but the backlash was fierce.
In the videothe gorgeous, dark-haired beauty posed in front of the mirror in the ‘princess dress’ she ordered from online retail giant ASOS.
The pricey piece, which retails for a staggering £225, was a showstopper in miniature form, adorned with dozens of pearls and a bright pink shell hem.
Undecided on what to wear with it, the ASOS shopper teamed the dress with a pale pink bag, on-trend statement earrings, stylish sunglasses and a pair of strappy pumps with pink floral detailing to match the style.
“Guys, is this suitable for a wedding? I left the tag on because I don’t know if I’m going to keep it,” Ellie was hesitant about her purchase.
“I really like it,” said the shopper, who asked for advice from other TikTok users on her platform.
”QUESTION I think I’m giving off some princess-it’s-your-wedding vibes, please help.”
‘Flashy’ outfit
But despite the fashionista loving the outfit she bought for the ‘foreign evening wedding’, the reactions on social media were a bit different.
Nearly 400 people protested and criticized the young woman’s attire, claiming it was inappropriate for a wedding.
One of them noted, “No, no wedding, no birthday party or vacation, but no wedding either.”
Another agreed. She looked nothing like an influencer in a popular tourist spot near Spain.
“No, that’s more of an Ibiza outfit.”
Others thought Ellie was a loyal Swiftie. One wrote: “Honestly, it looks like you’re going to a Taylor Swift concert.”
However, there was not only harsh criticism. Some were lyrical about the princess dress, which was also called ‘flashy’.
Do’s and Don’ts of Wedding Dress Codes
By Josie Griffiths, fabulous deputy editor and bride-to-be.
Josie Griffiths said: I will never forget the wedding I went to in October 2022 where one guest wore a white dress.
The dress didn’t fit properly, it reached the knee and didn’t look like a real wedding dress at all, but that didn’t stop everyone from judging her.
The rules for wedding guest outfits – which, unfortunately, are much stricter for women than for men – are supposed to be about “not overshadowing the bride,” which is actually quite difficult to do at someone else’s wedding.
But if you do it wrong as a guest, you’ll come across as a bit ridiculous, and to a lot of people who don’t know you personally.
It’s just not the right occasion for your new white dress, no matter how much online retailers like to dump them in the “wedding guest” category.
I would avoid anything too tight/short and avoid very formal dresses unless the dress code dictates it. You don’t want to be wearing a long sequined dress to a smart casual event.
Personally, I don’t like black dresses either, it’s not a funeral.
Otherwise, you should be pretty safe. Technically, wearing red means you’re in love with the groom, but that’s the kind of rule most people would laugh at these days.
I always check what colour the bridesmaids are wearing, just to be sure. After the Spanish wedding I saw them walking down the aisle in the exact same dress that I had in my Asos shopping bag a few weeks earlier.
If you are in doubt, it is best to ask the bride. But if you are already in doubt about your dress, that may be all the answer you need.
“I definitely like them! The shoes are confusing me a bit,” wrote one fan of the look.
Someone else recalled: “Girl, you look amazing, wear that dress! Life is too short!”
Another style lover told Ellie: ”“Why do people say Ibiza and festivals? It’s beautiful, I would definitely wear it to a wedding.”
While Ellie — who insisted she’s not a Swiftie — hasn’t yet revealed whether she’ll be wearing the embellished piece, she did confirm that the dress will go on sale in August.
The dress, which is part of the ASOS LUXE collection, is available in sizes UK 4 to UK 18 and has already been loved by 3,000 online shoppers. The gem-encrusted, pearl-embellished mini dress with a scalloped hem in bright pink is one of the hottest finds of the summer.
