Welcome to France’s goat village: this idyllic Alpine settlement is overrun by friendly goats who greet passing tourists during the summer months

You’ve probably heard of ghost towns, but what about goat towns?

Les Lindarets in the French Alps is often referred to as ‘Goat Village’ because during the summer months it is full of ‘friendly’ goats that roam freely and welcome passing tourists.

According to Vallee d’Aulpsa local tourist website, states that the goats are “always curious” and “always hungry.” Visitors can buy special croquettes to feed them in local shops.

In addition to its unique residents, the village, close to the resorts of Morzine and Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil ski area, has centuries-old chalets, cafés, restaurants and alpine pastures reminiscent of a ‘world of yesteryear’.

The village has become a tourist attraction and has a four out of five star rating on Tripadvisor, based on nearly 200 reviews.

One reviewer, ‘Helen H’, wrote: ‘Great opportunity to meet the mountain goats. Worth walking through the village and feeding them. [them].

‘They sell goat food in the shops and the friendly goats will happily let you feed them, although some of the more brazen ones will certainly try to steal the whole bag.’

User ‘susanann7’ described the village as a ‘delight’, noting that the ‘mountain views are breathtaking’. She added: ‘Children can feed the roaming goats and everyone has a smile on their face.’

To get there, visitors have the option of driving or taking a gondola lift from a nearby village

To reach the village, visitors can drive 20 minutes from Morzine. Follow the main road to Avoriaz and then turn off and drive up a winding, steep road to Les Lindarets.

You can also choose to take the Ardent Gondola lift, which is a 20-minute drive from Morzine and takes visitors directly into the village.

During the winter months, the goats live in their stables and the village is partly hidden under a thick layer of snow. The main road turns into a ski slope and is a popular stop for skiers and snowboarders.
