We’re Americans who spent a few months in England – and these are the 10 best places we visited (including ‘a city you wouldn’t expect to see on a travel list’)

An American couple who spent eight months exploring the UK have revealed their ten favourite places to visit in England.

London doesn’t make the list (as they assume visitors will naturally head there) – but places with hidden bars, breathtaking sea arches and some of the best fish and chips in the country do. Along with a city ‘you wouldn’t expect to find on a travel list’.

Duo Cara Atwell and Jeremy Davis — currently based in Portland, Oregon — revealed their rankings in a video on their YouTube channel “Magic Geekdom.”

So far the video has been viewed 83,000 times.

Read on for the full rankings, in reverse order. And vote for YOUR favorite spot in our poll.

Lincoln ‘has won us over’, says Cara, ‘with its incredible cathedral, fascinating history and delightful charm’. Fancy a visit? Prepare yourself for some calf-burning hills.

Cara adds: ‘It’s a very steep town. The main street is even called Steep Hill.’

Still, it’s worth discussing, as Cara describes it as “postcard perfect.”

9. Newcastle-upon-Tyne

“We seem to talk to strangers the most when we're in Newcastle,” Cara said

“We seem to talk to strangers the most when we’re in Newcastle,” Cara said

Cara told MailOnline that Newcastle upon Tyne exceeded her expectations.

She said: ‘It’s probably not a place you’d expect to see on a travel list. We have friends who live there who didn’t know much about it before we went, but it’s a great city.

‘We were pleasantly surprised by the great selection of food, the fantastic view over the quay and how friendly everyone there seems to be.

‘When we’re in Newcastle we mostly chat to strangers.’

8. Bath

Bath, says Cara, is ‘without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in England’.

She adds: ‘It really captivated us. In all our travels it is still one of the most memorable cities.’

The Roman Baths in Bath are a must-see attraction, says Cara, adding that the museum there contains “so much wonderful information.”

Other sights the couple visited included Bath Abbey, ‘an architectural wonder’, and Pulteney Bridge, ‘full of lovely shops and restaurants’.

In Manchester, the couple visited a hidden bar called The Washhouse, which you enter through a fake laundromat.

According to Jeremy, the bar embodies exactly what makes Manchester so attractive: it’s ‘cool and creative’.

He also recommends a visit to Manchester’s “breathtaking” Cathedral and the market-place-style Afflecks shopping centre.

Jeremy adds: ‘It’s an eclectic city with a mix of industrial vibrancy and modern trends.’

6. Jurassic Coast

According to Cara, the Cotswolds ‘makes you feel like you’re living in an English fairytale’.

It is a place, she says, full of “the most beautiful villages” and “rolling hills”.

A highlight for the couple was a visit to the village of Painswick, where they wandered through the churchyard, an experience Cara likens to ‘stepping into a storybook scene’.

3.Whitby

'We were most surprised by Whitby because it was so different to any other place we had ever been,' Cara told MailOnline

The couple were ‘blown away’ by Whitby’s architecture and raved about the number of places ‘with stunning views’.

They also highlight the impressive abbey – ‘one of the best spots in town’ – and the fish and chips.

“If you get fish and chips from one of Whitby’s famous fish restaurants, you really can’t go wrong,” Cara says in the video.

She told MailOnline that this was the place that had surprised them most.

The vlogger explained: ‘We were most surprised by Whitby because it was so different to anywhere else we had ever been. It was one of the first coastal towns we had ever visited in England and from the moment we arrived we were blown away by the scenery. The layers of red roofs with the ruins of the abbey hovering above the cliffs are so breathtaking.’

2. The lake area

The Lake District's 'breathtaking scenery' helped the area take second place in the rankings

According to Cara, the Lake District is home to some of the ‘most breathtaking scenery’ in the country.

The pair were enchanted by Lake Buttermere, charmed by ‘charming’ Keswick and admired Ambleside, home to the fairytale Bridge House, a curious building straddling a river.

Another highlight was Bassenthwaite Lake Station, where they serve afternoon tea in a restored railway station, with some tables in a replica Orient Express carriage. ‘A special experience,’ said Cara.

‘There’s nowhere quite like York,’ says Jeremy. ‘It’s a city that’s a perfect mix of history and charm and feels so quintessentially English.’

The pair visited York Minster – “one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals in the world” – and wandered the Shambles, which they say is often referred to as the best-preserved medieval street in Europe.

“It’s something we’ve never seen before,” says Jeremy. “And we loved browsing through the quirky, independent shops.”

He concludes: ‘York is the kind of city where I just want to wander around and get lost.’
