Bending Spoons is laying off a whopping 75% of WeTransfer’s workforce after acquiring the file-sharing platform a few weeks ago.
The company, which employs an estimated 350 workers, could lose as many as 260 staff in one of the largest rounds of layoffs this year.
The news of the layoffs comes just over a month after the Italian tech company acquired WeTransfer, the fifth merger in the tech sector in 2024.
WeTransfer prepared for major layoffs
Bending Spoons has a proven track record of significantly reducing headcount following recent acquisitions, in addition to implementing other consumer-focused changes to subscriptions. When TechRadar Pro When asked about the potential impact of the merger, including layoffs, Bending Spoons declined to comment.
It has now come to light through a Reuters reports that CEO Luca Ferrari has confirmed 75% layoffs, commenting: “I won’t be more specific at this stage as the layoffs have not yet been fully defined.”
At the time of the acquisition, Ferrari stated: “We are excited to [WeTransfer’s] new owner, and we feel a strong sense of responsibility to ensure the brand and the company continue to flourish for many years to come.”
In a statement to TechCrunchFerrari added: “In this particular case, the vision we have developed is that of a smaller, more sharply focused WeTransfer organization, which we believe will be better positioned to serve WeTransfer’s success with a long-term vision.”
This isn’t the first time Bending Spoons has made drastic changes for a company it has acquired. In July 2024, under new Italian leadership, it was confirmed that “most” US- and Chile-based Evernote employees would be laid off, as the note-taking platform packed up and moved to Europe to be closer to the Bending Spoons team.
