Where can I vote early? It’s easy to find the answer online
There are less than 24 hours to go until the 2024 general election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. That means early voting is still happening in most states – at least 78 million people are already casting their votes — and for some, it’s important to know that your early polling place will most likely be different than your polling place on Election Day.
Experts on the American election process have often encouraged people to take full advantage of early voting. Not only can it be helpful for busy people who may be short on time on Election Day itself, but it can also give them extra time to sort things out in case there are issues with their voter registration or ballots.
With that in mind, read on to see how you can find your early voting location online. For more information about the election, read up on how voting selfies can land you in legal hot water and see if you still have time to register to vote.
What is early voting?
When you think of “early voting,” you probably imagine what is specifically called “early in-person voting,” where you go to a specific place and cast your vote in person before Election Day. These locations often resemble a polling place you would see on the big day, with volunteer polling places and booths where you can fill out your ballot.
In some states, this means going to an official local government office, requesting an absentee ballot, filling it out and submitting it on the spot. This method is often referred to as “in-person absentee voting” or “no-excuse absentee voting.” Only a few states — Alabama, Mississippi and New Hampshire — do not offer universally accessible early voting, where people can only request an absentee ballot with an approved excuse.
Where can I find my early voting polling place?
It’s primarily those “early in-person voting” locations that you’ll want to make sure of, as these are often different from the polling place you go to on Election Day. If you use online tools that claim to help you find your “polling place,” you’ll almost always get the address to go to on Election Day, not during early voting, so you’ll have to look elsewhere.
To find out where you can vote early, the best place to check is your local county government’s official website. Simply search for the name of your county and the term “early voting” and you should find a page list where residents can go to vote early. Another good choice for finding the information you need is from your county Board of Elections website.
In some cases, multiple locations are listed, but don’t worry, as every resident should be able to vote at any of these locations. So choose the location closest to you. If Stem.org notesyou may need to search specifically for “absentee voting” to find the information you need, depending on where you live.
