Where is Apple CarPlay 2? A 2024 launch seems unlikely, but not impossible
- Apple has promised that the first CarPlay 2 vehicles will hit the market in 2024
- With only a few weeks to go, that deadline might be missed
- CarPlay 2 is a major overhaul, but we’ve only seen renderings so far
If you think back to Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2022, you may remember the company announcing that a new version of CarPlay would be coming soon with new dashboards and features for connected cars. Well, more than two years later, we’re still waiting – and Apple doesn’t have long to fulfill its own CarPlay 2 goal.
That’s because, as noted by MacRumorenApple’s website continues to maintain that the first vehicles with CarPlay 2 will arrive “in 2024.” But with less than three weeks to go until the end of the year, there isn’t much time left before that deadline passes.
CarPlay 2 is expected to “provide content for all driver screens, including the instrument cluster,” Apple says. Unlike the first generation of CarPlay, the new version can more or less take over the entire dashboard in your car and deliver relevant, customizable data in a unified interface.
Unfortunately, there has been virtually no movement in this area since Apple announced CarPlay 2 in June 2022. Sure, we’ve had a few drafts, renderings, and discussions since then, but nothing more concrete than that.
As the deadline approaches, we’re starting to wonder if Apple has some last-minute news (which isn’t unprecedented for CarPlay) or if this is a goal it just can’t achieve.
Not much longer
You may remember that we have been here before. Last year, Apple promised that a preview of the first models equipped with the next generation of CarPlay would be released before the end of 2023. Well, the clock ticked and ticked until Porsche and Aston Martin finally delivered a pair of dashboard concepts on December 20, barely making a peep. before 2024.
But this time, no views are promised. Apple’s website claims that the “first models” will hit the market before the end of 2024, and that sounds like they will be purchasable, drivable cars. It won’t be long before these vehicles appear, and it now looks highly unlikely.
CarPlay has hit a bumpy road over the past two years, with major manufacturers like GM pulling out and Rivian saying they wouldn’t use it in the first place.
Still, Apple claims that more than 800 car models work with CarPlay, and the system isn’t going away anytime soon. But it needs to put the skates on if it arrives before the end of the year.
