Who is Anthony McGrath?

Anthony McGrath was a hospital surgeon who was 46 years old when he was sent to prison.

He married Anne-Louise McGrath, a GP, in 2009 and the couple moved to London where she got a job at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital.

The couple also had four children who were present Private school.

McGrath from St Albans, Hertfordshirewhere he owned a seven-bedroom house worth £1.1 million.

They paid £2,400 a month for a five-bedroom house Bedfordshire at the time.

All their properties realized £825,000 mortgage and later raised a further £135,000 with a mortgage again.

He nicknamed himself 'Paddy Bond'.

What crime did Anthony McGrath commit?

McGrath committed a burglary at the property he and his wife were renting Luton Hoo Estate, to apply for insurance.

He stole 95 items including a £35,000 Persian carpet, two clocks, antiques, artwork, jewelery and a 19th century red marble fireplace.

According to the Daily emailhe and his wife were “tens of thousands” in debt.

Some items have been sent to another family home in Ireland.

After investigation, police discovered that he and his wife had also committed three cases of mortgage fraud, amounting to over a million.

Where is Anthony McGrath now?

McGrath was sentenced in 2019 after being convicted found guilty of fraud through false statements and committing acts with the intention of perverting the course of justice.

Meanwhile, his wife Anne was accused of mortgage fraud.

However, she was found not guilty of all charges.

Judge Barbara Mensah said: “The crimes were sophisticated, detailed, well planned and carried out over a long period of time.

“McGrath has demonstrated a pathological level of dishonesty and arrogance, and has taken every opportunity to attack and defraud his insurance company.”

In January 2018, a Luton Crown Court sentenced him to eight years in prison.

In March 2021, he was given three months to repay over half a million pounds or face a further five years in prison.

He was ordered to pay £564,518 after a three-day Proceeds of Crime Act confiscation hearing.

McGrath had several assets which were examined by Judge Steven Evans.

These include:

  • benefits from the estate of his deceased parents
  • the family home and grounds of Somerville House
  • a Georgian built country house in County Meath, Ireland
  • an old Fiat car costing £1445
  • 'antiquities, art and valuable' worth at least £139,000
  • McGrath's inheritance of £37,000 from his parents.

There are no reports on whether or not he paid the amount.
