Who is Atishi, Delhi’s new chief minister? | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced on Tuesday Minister of Delhi Atishi the successor of incumbent Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who announced on Sunday that he would resign within two days.
While addressing a rally on Sunday, CM Kejriwal was released on bail in an alleged liquor policy scamannounced that he would apply for a “certificate of honesty” from the Voters in Delhi and that he would not be the Prime Minister of the national capital until then.
After Kejriwal’s announcement, speculations were rife across the Delhi political spectrum for two days over the name of his possible successor, with Aitish being the favourite for the post of CM.
According to reports, Atishi’s name was also proposed during the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting held at Arvind Kejriwal’s residence last night. Her name was proposed and a consensus was reached by party workers.
Atishi, one of Kejriwal’s political confidants, held several key portfolios in the government while top party leaders, including Manish Sisodia and Arvind Kejriwal, were in jail for the excise fraud.
Atishi’s responsibilities include finance, planning, PWD, water, energy, education, higher education, services and publicity. Since the party’s inception, she has made substantial contributions to its expansion and progress.
Who is Delhi’s new CM Atishi?
Atishi, born on June 8, 1981, grew up in an academic family in Delhi. Her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, are both professors at the University of Delhi.
Atishi did her undergraduate studies at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. She was then awarded a Chevening Scholarship, which enabled her to continue her studies at Oxford University. There she completed her Masters programme. Later, as a Rhodes Scholar, Atishi studied at Magdalen College, Oxford in 2005.
Marlena has been a member of the AAP since 2012 and has played a key role in the party and the government ever since Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appointed her as an advisor to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, particularly on education issues.
Party functionaries stress that her importance became clear when Kejriwal, while in jail, suggested that Atishi hoist the national flag on his behalf at the government’s Independence Day rally in Delhi.
However, Lt. Governor VK Saxena nominated Minister Kailash Gahlot for the task. As an MLA representing Kalkaji constituency, Atishi has been at the forefront of the party’s communication efforts and has taken the lead in addressing crucial issues such as Delhi’s water dispute with neighbouring states.
She is an outspoken party functionary who speaks out on the day-to-day running of the party and takes on the BJP and LG.
Since the party’s inception, Atishi has made substantial contributions to its expansion and advancement. He played a crucial role as a member of the committee that drafted the manifesto for the 2013 state elections and formulated the party’s objectives and vision.
Last name controversy
In 2018, Atishi, the AAP candidate for the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat, removed her surname ‘Marlena’ from her Twitter account and all publicity material after a whisper campaign, allegedly by the BJP, claimed that she was a Christian.
She said she wanted to “prevent the BJP from polarising the elections”.
Her Twitter handle (now X), @AtishiMarlena, has changed to @AtishiAAP. The party’s official website now reflects the change.
Atishi, a Punjabi Rajput, was given the title “Marlena” by her parents in tribute to communist icons Marx and Lenin.
The party refuted the BJP’s charge that AAP was engaging in caste politics to gain an advantage in elections, saying the removal of Marlena Atishi was its own decision.
