Why INDIA Bloc Called For Bandh In Puducherry | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: Opposition INDIA blockincluding the Congress, the DMK and the communist parties, have called for a bandh (strike) in Pondicherry on Wednesday.
The sunrise to sunset bandh has been called upon to protest against the hike in power tariffs by the AINRC-BJP-led coalition government in the Union Territory.
The opposition claims that the government’s decision to introduce pre-paid meters for energy supply and privatise electricity distribution would deprive farmers of a fair supply of electricity.
The Congress Unit Chief in Puducherry V Vaithilingamwho also happens to Puducherry Lok Sabha MPhas requested the cooperation of all sections of the population to make Wednesday’s bandh a success.
The opposition claims that privatisation of energy distribution would lead to private parties charging unfair prices and holding consumers hostage with sharply increased prices.
The INDIA bloc stated that there is no inconvenience now when the Department of Electricity supplies the power. All the assets of the department would be made available to the private sector if the power supply becomes the prerogative of the private entrepreneurs, news agency PTI reported.
Earlier, during a similar protest organised by the INDIA bloc, R Siva of the DMK lamented that the AINRC-BJP coalition The government had failed to learn from its defeat in the Lok Sabha.
Former Puducherry Chief Minister and senior Congress leader V Narayanasamy has also warned that the INDIA Alliance will hold a series of protests if the government refuses to withdraw the hike in power tariffs and has also dropped its proposal to privatise the electricity ministry.
In view of the protest, classes for classes 1 to 8 will be suspended in all government and private schools in Puducherry today (Wednesday). However, classes 9 to 12 will continue as normal, news agency ANI reported.
