Why this photo at Woolworths checkout is angering Australians: ‘It’s getting out of hand’

A Woolworths customer was left furious after paying almost $20 for just three items.

The customer bought a single vine tomato, two litres of milk and 680 grams of chicken thigh fillets at a store in Brentford Square, in Melbourne’s east, on Monday.

Yesterday he posted a photo on Reddit after sending the image and the cost of the groceries to his shocked partner.

“$19 worth of food,” he wrote alongside the post.

The customer, who wished to remain anonymous, said he paid $11.90 for the chicken, $5.80 for the milk and $1.28 for the tomato.

“I just thought it was a bit absurd when I looked at the stuff I was getting compared to the cost,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘I didn’t look for the cheapest and most efficient things, otherwise I would have had a bigger store.’

He said he spends about $150 a week on groceries for himself and his partner.

The customer paid $18.98 for a small pack of chicken fillets, a bottle of lactose-free milk and $1.28 for a plum tomato (pictured)

The couple normally shop at Coles and Woolworths, but now they also buy their groceries from other retailers, such as Aldi and butchers.

Social media users weighed in on the total cost of the catch, with many shocked by the high price of the chicken.

“This is the smaller package, which is terribly expensive,” someone wrote.

“I can’t believe chicken is so expensive these days,” added another.

“It’s getting out of hand. A four pack of chicken thighs used to cost me $3 for 6,” wrote a third.

Others were furious with the big supermarkets as Australians grapple with rising inflation.

“I didn’t know fresh milk was a premium product these days,” one person wrote.

“It’s getting out of hand,” said another.

A Woolworths spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia the supermarket is working hard to provide added value to customers.

“It’s important to note that lactose-free milk is more expensive than regular milk because of the extra processing required to remove the natural lactose,” she said.

‘The tray of RSPCA-approved chicken fillets contains multiple portions, suitable for a family meal or to enjoy over several days.’
