Windows 10 users have been resisting pushy pop-ups to get them to upgrade to Windows 11 – and Microsoft has finally relented
With just a year and a few months to go before Windows 10 reaches its end of support date, Microsoft’s strategy of begging Windows 10 users to switch to Windows 11 has been pretty poorly executed. Windows 10 users have been hit with annoying ad campaigns that are intrusive and often take up the entire screen or pop up incessantly. However, Microsoft has vowed to pull the plug thanks to negative user feedback. Yay!
According to Windows LatestMicrosoft stated, “To honor feedback from our users, these invitations will no longer begin with the April 2024 monthly security update. We will share a new timeline in the coming months.”
This is great news for Windows 10 users who are tired of having intrusive ads shoved down their throats. However, it’s unclear whether Microsoft is abandoning this approach altogether, or if the company simply wants to provide a less obtrusive way to encourage users to upgrade without drawing too much criticism.
Windows 11 has been gaining market share lately as more and more people switch to the new operating system. It doesn’t seem like Microsoft should be harping on this topic, especially since the Windows 11 end date has been on the minds of many people for a long time.
People are still hesitant to make the switch to Windows 11 for a number of reasons, including persistent bugs and flawed update formats, glitchy Start menus, and strict system requirements. Users may also be hesitant to embrace Windows Copilot and the other AI features that have appeared in Windows 11.
To be honest, these massive popups have probably driven more people away from Windows 11 than they have pushed them toward it. It’s similar to how many people are annoyed by the Edge popups that appear when you use the browser to download alternatives like Google Chrome or Opera GX.
We can only hope that Microsoft takes this punishment as a lesson and doesn’t make the situation worse.
