Windows 11 update failure is becoming a joke, but it looks like Microsoft is working hard to fix it
- The new preview build of Windows 11 is almost entirely about fixing bugs
- Some major fixes have been made for the Start menu and more
- Microsoft is working hard to fix all issues in Windows 11 24H2
Windows 11 has been hit by a slew of bugs lately, with the move to version 24H2, as you’ve probably noticed – but the more positive news is that Microsoft is busy fixing quite a few of those gremlins that are in the works.
We have proof of this thanks to the latest Windows 11 preview release pushed to the developer channel, namely build 26120.2213.
Microsoft lists ongoing bug fix work in the usual manner blog postand while there’s a lot of troubleshooting going on, some of them are more mundane – so let’s pick out a few highlights.
A remarkable one bug we recently reported has reached Task Managerresulting in it showing that there are no apps and processes running on the host PC – which of course can never happen (otherwise Windows 11 itself wouldn’t work, let alone anything else). Microsoft informs us that it has resolved this issue where Task Manager is claiming a zero count for running processes.
Additionally, this fixes an “underlying issue” with the latest 24H2 preview that prevented some games from launching at all.
Multiple bugs with the Windows 11 Start menu were fixed with build 26120, including one where people noticed a large amount of space between apps in the application menu list. There’s also a broad fix for an issue that “affects the reliability of the Start Menu,” we’re told.
There is a similar issue with File Explorer where items in the navigation pane also became too spread out, with too much space between them for some users, and this has also been fixed. A smaller issue where RAW photos taken in portrait mode were displayed in landscape mode using the File Explorer thumbnails has also been resolved.
Additionally, Microsoft has made a number of fixes for several minor issues with the taskbar, including an issue where the ‘X’ button to close a window outside the taskbar preview (which appears when you hover over the app on the bar) didn’t work. t works.
Analysis: It’s all about squashing bugs
This preview build of Windows 11 is notable because there’s hardly anything in terms of feature additions (just a minor change for the IME toolbar that won’t make any difference for most users).
Almost the entire build is about bug fixes, and in addition there are a number of known issues reported that have not yet been resolved. One of them is the bugs with the new gamepad keyboard layout for Windows 11 users that caused this put on ice for the time beingand the other is an issue where those using multiple monitors are seeing corruption on their desktop background (with “large black areas” mysteriously appearing).
Microsoft is still working on fixes for these issues, and there are quite a few other issues affecting the latest version of the desktop operating system. To say that Windows 11 took off 24H2 rocky start in terms of insects is actually an understatement, but it seems like Microsoft is working hard to combat this different problems.
