As BJP members sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention and raised their concerns in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress party has also stated that the Prime Minister should consult Banerjee on the issue as the state shares the opinion. border with the neighboring country and fears a potential spillover of refugees from across the border, which could pose a challenge for both Bengal and the country.
TMC leader in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandopadhyay said here on Wednesday that “we want the Prime Minister to speak to the Bengal Chief Minister as this is a matter of deep concern for the state government. Even though it is a bilateral issue with Bangladesh and the state government is on the same page as that of the Center on the Bangladesh issue, it is important to involve Mamata Banerjee in this issue just like it was done for the Teesta water or Land Boundary Agreement between the two countries” as Bengal is a stakeholder in any issue with Bangladesh.
In Lok Sabha, members of the BJP expressed concern and sought Prime Minister Modi’s intervention in the release of Iskcon monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is jailed in Bangladesh on sedition charges.
Ujjain MP Anil Firojiya raised the issue during Zero Hour, saying there were no lawyers available in Bangladesh and anyone willing to represent him was fighting for life (since he was attacked).
BJP member from Mathura, Hema Malini, said insult to religion, violence and injustice cannot be tolerated. “We cannot remain silent. This is not a matter of diplomacy but is related to our emotions and devotion to Shri Krishna,” she said, hoping that the Bangladesh government would release the Iskcon monk.
BJP MP Dilip Saikia, from Darrang-Udalguri in Assam, wanted the Parliament to pass a resolution to send a message to the Bangladesh government for a complete end to atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
