With this feature, Claude AI can now view images in PDF

Anthropic released another new artificial intelligence (AI) feature for its chatbot Claude on Friday. With this feature, called PDF Image Understanding, Claude can now view and process images embedded in PDF files, including graphs and images. This capability has been added to the recently released Claude 3.5 Sonnet AI model. The company claims that this allows the chatbot to accurately understand complex documents and provide better analysis of the data. The Anthropic Application Packaging Interface (API) also supports PDF input. This feature is available in beta.

Anthropic releases PDF Image Understanding for Claude

In his support documentsAnthropic has detailed the new PDF support feature. The ability to understand images in PDF was added to Claude 3.5 Sonnet version 20241022, and it can handle images in PDF and support PDF input.

Breaking down the first capability, Claude can now view and process images, graphs, and images added to a PDF to perform a deeper analysis of the document. Once done, users can ask the AI questions about the specific images and it can respond with relevant information.

Until now, Claude accepted images as input and could answer questions about them, but he couldn’t process images linked to a document. With this feature, Anthropic now allows users to get more detailed responses about PDFs. The feature is likely aimed at the business users of the chatbot who use it to analyze sales and marketing documents and other similar files.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet now also accepts PDF as input, meaning users can now upload PDF files directly and users can ask questions about them. This brings Claude’s capabilities on par with Google’s NotebookLM, a dedicated platform for PDF and other file types.

Currently, the maximum file size of a PDF uploaded to Claude can be 32 MB, with a maximum number of pages of 1,000. Additionally, the chatbot cannot process PDFs that are password protected or encrypted. Anthropic will make the feature available on Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI soon.
