New Rangers -manager Russell Martin has admitted that he is a “weird” in the footie world.
As a vegan Buddhist and fully paid member of the Green Party, it is fair to say that the former Scotland International is not your typical growls Gaffer.
The 39-year-old dates also former boys is allowed Pin-up Lucy Pinder, 41, swims in the sea and uses a cryotherapy room near his house.
But even though he was the most ‘awake’ boss of the sport, the retired defender actually endured a brutal upbringing.
The second youngest of four brothers, Martin grew up in the Hollingbury area of Brighton and watched how his deceased Scottish dad Dean was violent towards mother Kerry and Stints in prison.
His parental home was lost to his gambling debts – and he moved them next to a bookmakers.
In a recent podcast interview with Footy legend Gary Lineker said Martin: “There was too much violence and it became a bit normal. From my father to my mother. I had witnessed a lot. Much of my childhood was spent on placing the adults in my life.
“The problem with my father was that he had the ability to be great and really sympathetic, but the gap between him at his best and worst was too great.
“And he was a big gambler, so the day he finished how he did with the bookmakers and he worked on the taxis for nights, so that you couldn’t make a sound in the morning, so it was a lot of time eggshells and I spent a lot of time kicking the ball against the wall of the bookmakers.
“My father was great in some ways, but I would never do what he did with me with my children.”
Martin was forced to leave his troubled father and take care of his mother when they moved to escape the violence at home. Despite the early trauma, he excelled at school where he became a headboy.
And even after a series of top clubs had rejected the budding football player, he joined Non-League Side Lewes and cleaned windows and pub toilets in the morning with his uncle and shifts in a Spar supermarket by road to earn some spare money.
He received his break under Arsenal – legend Tony Adams, 58, in Wycombe before he continued to Peterborough and Norwich – whose manager at the time, Celtic hero Paul Lambert, 55, had a huge influence on his career.
During this time the Scots Stopper married Bodybuilder Jasmine Martin and the couple had three children before they split in 2023.

In the meantime, he revealed that he had come to the Green Party in 2018 after he was disillusioned with politics.

The philanthropist once said: “I am probably considered a bit strange in terms of football. But to be honest, I am past the point to worry what others think.
“It’s not like that:” Is it going to harm my employment opportunities because of where I vote and what I stand for? ” If so, I wouldn’t want to work for those people. “
Martin prepared for his coaching career during his match days -studied for his coaching badges at the age of 22 and in 2019 his UEFA Pro license at the Scottish FA.
He enjoyed successful spells that are in charge of MK Dons and Swansea City before his honeymoon in Southampton – they were promoted to the English Premier League – when they were banned and he was fired.
The heartbreaking end of his top flight tone was no surprise after a loss of 5-0 – but it could have been treated better. Martin said: “I started thinking that time had been done. I had to go to the toilet and compose myself before I did the team conversation. So I went inside and said to the boys during the break, 0-5 down:” I’m fired tonight. “
“It was like an outdoor body experience to view the second half, I felt so independent of it because I knew what would come.
“After the game I spoke with the boys again and said:” Thanks for everything, I’m not sure what’s going to happen now. “
“I went to the press conference and asked the head of the media” What happens? ‘
He says: “We made the statement,” so it was a very fast press conference. He said I had to go upstairs. I wanted to wait until the morning, but we did it [the sacking] With the owners immediately after the game. ‘
