Woman claims cruise line threw her luggage in the ocean – revealing a stranger found it in the water after she had already set sail
An outraged cruise passenger told how the company she was travelling with “dropped her bag in the ocean” and it was only recovered thanks to the efforts of an unknown person.
Lindsey Hargesheimer from Denver, Colorado, took to TikTok to air her grievances, where she nearly 10 minute video in which the series of events is described in detail.
In the clip, the wedding photographer tells how she discovered her bag was missing when she and her family boarded a Celebrity Cruises ship in Amsterdam. She was the only one who didn’t get her luggage.
When she called the cruise line for an update, they confirmed that they could not find her bag and the AirTag she had placed inside was not working.
But when she turned on her phone later, she immediately received a call saying that someone from the Amsterdam port had retrieved her suitcase ‘from the ocean… from the canal’.

Although there were no official tags on the bag indicating its destination, the stranger was able to contact Lindsey because she had her phone number and information on a tag.
Lindsey said she was “angry, upset and distraught” over the accident, as all of her belongings for a two-week trip were in the bag.
The contents included clothing, medicines, nutritional supplements, makeup, toiletries, camera equipment and even family jewelry.
To make matters worse, Lindsey says she initially received no compensation for the incident, nor any vouchers to purchase new items from the onboard shops.
The only things she got in the meantime were a T-shirt, a deodorant roller, a toothbrush and toothpaste.
She told viewers, filming from the floor of her cabin: “This is absolutely unacceptable…
‘The [staff] “They all realize how ridiculous it is because they don’t believe me when I tell them.”
The content creator continued, “I personally think Celebrity Cruise Line did not handle this situation well at all. I don’t feel like any mistake they made was taken care of.
The wedding photographer said she also had camera equipment in her bag
“Like, you dropped my bag in the ocean! It’s one thing if it’s left at the dock, but you dropped my bag in the ocean and didn’t report it.”
Lindsey says she is happy her bag was found, but she has no idea how much water damage it sustained.
“I have no idea what to expect. I have no idea if I can even use anything that’s in my bag… I have nothing,” she says, trying to hold back tears.
In a follow-up on TikTok, Lindsey gives her viewers an update, revealing that she won’t be getting her bag back during the entire cruise.
Instead, she will have to inspect the bag when she is back in the Netherlands in a week or so. Together with a dock worker and a Celebrity Cruises employee, she will then see what damage has been done.
She says: ‘At this point I have honestly accepted that there is no way to salvage the contents of that bag.
‘[Plus]’It will remain in the harbour for another 10 days and will become increasingly dirty.’
In order to still have some other clothes to wear, Lindsey went shopping in one of the ports. There she was able to buy two outfits, a pair of walking shoes and some toiletries.
She says Celebrity Cruises has also since given her a $400 credit, along with two laundry vouchers.
During a meeting, she was also told that the cost of replacing all her damaged belongings would be reimbursed.
She said, ‘I don’t have it in writing, but that’s what I was told.’
So far, Lindsey’s TikToks have been viewed nearly 100,000 times and many have sympathy for her.
One viewer wrote: ‘I’m so sorry this happened. It’s crazy that they didn’t compensate you for anything. I’m worried about your medication!’
Another commenter, who claimed to have previously worked on a Celebrity Cruises ship, also offered a tip: ‘Former Celebrity crew member. Next time you go to guest services, ask to set up a meeting with the HOTEL DIRECTOR. Not the ship’s general manager, but the hotel. The highest of the highest on board to help in this situation!’
In response to comments from people who thought it was irresponsible for her to have forgotten her bag, the photographer explained that she was traveling with her grandmother who is in a wheelchair. She gave her bag to a staff member so she could push the chair on board.
“That was the last I saw of them. Someone at the docks took my bags from me,” Lindsey revealed.
