X will soon let you edit direct messages after you send them
X – Elon Musk’s microblogging platform – has been gradually adding a slew of features since the billionaire’s acquisition in 2022, when it was still known as Twitter. The latest feature that could soon be introduced on X is the ability to edit direct messages (DMs), according to information provided by an employee at the social media platform, although the timeline of the rollout remains unknown.
According to reports, the platform recently started developing a feature that will allow users to disable links in comments on posts.
X Working on support for editing direct messages
X employee Enrique (@enriquebrgn) claimed that the platform would start allowing editing of DMs. It is speculated that the feature will work similarly to the one in other social media apps like WhatsApp and Instagram, which allows users to edit sent messages for a specific period of time.
In response to a user’s question as to whether the same functionality could be introduced in answers as well, the employee said: “baby steps”. The claim was also supported by a remark on Elon Musk’s message.
While X does offer the ability to edit posts and comments, it is limited to X Premium subscribers. Additionally, DMs once sent cannot be edited. With the expected development of the feature, it remains unclear whether it will be tied to the premium subscription as well or will be available to all users.
If successful, the ability to edit DMs could help users correct unintentional mistakes that sometimes occur while typing.
Other features in development
In addition to more functionality in DMs, the microblogging platform is also said to be developing other new features, including a ‘Dislike’ button on iOS as a way to downvote posts. The feature was reportedly leaked via code references in the X app, with hints at an emoji-like broken heart icon for dislikes. There is speculation that the same feature will also be introduced for post comments, implementing a Reddit-like format for rating posts and comments.
