Xiaomi working on its own triple-screen smartphone: report
Huawei recently launched its latest foldable smartphone under its Honor brand, called the Magic V3, which also happened to be the thinnest production foldable smartphone in existence. Shortly after, Huawei followed this up with the launch of its (rather expensive) Mate XT Ultimate, which now appears to be the world’s first production-ready tri-fold smartphone. Xiaomi also launched its latest foldable smartphone in July, called the Mix Fold 4, and now it appears that it has a tri-fold smartphone in development as well.
According to a report According to 91 Mobiles, Xiaomi recently filed a patent application for its first triple-clutch device with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). The application seen by the source also hinted at the design (which we believe to be the schematics) of the device in question. This patent was filed on September 3, which is very recent.
The source in his report has created renders based on information shown in the patent, and the device (at least in these initial renders) appears to be quite thick compared to Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate. The device appears to have dual hinges, one of which allows the first (and outer) portion of the foldable to flip outwards, transforming it into a regular bar-shaped smartphone when fully closed. When fully opened, it appears to take on a tablet-like form factor with a fairly rectangular main display. Xiaomi’s take on the camera module appears to be a horizontal layout with three cameras and a flash module placed in a row next to each other.
Despite having dual hinges and three body panels on the back, for some reason it doesn’t appear quite as wide as Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate, but visually it does appear considerably longer and narrower. It appears this way both open and folded, more resembling Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has a narrow cover display compared to most foldable phones currently available globally.
What’s also unclear about Xiaomi’s triple-screen smartphone (as the source points out) is whether it will be a production-ready device, like Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate.
News of Xiaomi’s first tri-fold phone first emerged in an earlier report, which came from Chinese social media platform Weibo. The tipster didn’t provide any details about the phone’s hardware configuration, instead only randomly mentioning that such a device was in development. He also reported that this tri-fold smartphone would be thicker than usual and that it could be announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 next year.
