You can now search for specific images with this Google Photos feature
Google Photos is getting a number of improvements, including a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature, the tech giant announced Thursday. The photo gallery app is now getting an Ask Photos feature, which lets users search for specific images by sending a conversational question to Gemini. The platform is also getting a “descriptive search” feature, which lets users type descriptive queries into the app’s search bar. Notably, the Ask Photos feature is currently only available in early access.
Google Photos Gets an Ask Photos Feature
In a blog postthe company announced the new Google Photos feature. Ask Photos is an experimental feature that is part of Google Labs. It is currently in a limited release with access for only select users in the US.
Ask Photos will be available as a separate interface within the Google Photos app. Users can open it by tapping a search icon in the bottom right of the app. In a full-screen interface, users can now open Gemini and ask to show specific images. Users can ask questions in conversational language.
For example, users can ask, “Show me my photos from Shaurya’s birthday party,” and Gemini can understand and contextualize the information to show relevant images. Additionally, users can also ask Gemini to suggest images to share on a social media app.
Google stressed that it is focused on user privacy and data security. The company claimed that user data in Google Photos will no longer be used for advertising. People can view the searches in Ask Photos to improve the feature, but the company claims that this will only happen after the user’s account has been disconnected.
Additionally, the tech giant stated that the answers Ask Photos provides, including your photos and videos, are not reviewed by humans.
Additionally, Google Photos is also improving the platform’s native search experience for all users. A new feature called descriptive queries allows users to type a search query in natural sentences to add more information about what they’re looking for. This feature is rolling out in English to all users on Android and iOS.
