You can now transfer Apple Music playlists to YouTube Music: Here’s how

Apple Music is getting a new cross-platform feature that will let users transfer their playlists to YouTube Music. While the Cupertino-based tech giant emphasizes that playlists can be transferred to “another service,” only YouTube Music is currently supported. However, users can only transfer playlists that they’ve created themselves or collaboratively. Music files or the folders that playlists are organized into cannot be transferred through this process.

Apple Music playlists can be transferred to YouTube Music

The details of Apple’s new playlist transfer functionality have been revealed in a recently published support pageThe iPhone maker says users can request to transfer their Apple Music playlists to YouTube Music from the Data and privacy page.

To transfer playlists, users will need an active Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription, as well as an active YouTube Music account. While transferring a playlist typically takes a few minutes, Apple’s support document explains that it could take several hours, depending on the number and size of playlists.

Currently, Apple only allows users to transfer playlists that they have created. This includes collaborative playlists that a user owns. However, non-collaborative shared playlists, curated playlists, or the music files themselves are not transferable. Additionally, the folders that Apple Music playlists are organized into cannot be transferred.

Furthermore, the playlists to be transferred can only contain songs that are available on YouTube Music. Exclusive songs, podcasts, or audiobooks will not be transferred. It is notable that the playlist is not deleted from Apple Music after it has been transferred.

How to Transfer Apple Music Playlists to YouTube Music

  1. Go to Apple’s Data and privacy page.
  2. Sign in to your Apple ID account.
  3. Select Transfer a copy of your data.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Sign in to your YouTube Music account to transfer the playlists.
  6. Apple will send you an email notification once the transfer begins.
  7. You can check the status of the transfer or cancel the transfer at the Data and privacy page.
  8. Once the transfer is complete, you will receive a confirmation email.
